1. Học từ mọi người xung quanh

Trong trường hợp của tôi thì những người đó phần lớn là người nước ngoài nói tiếng Anh, vì sau khi ra trường tôi làm việc cho một hãng thông tấn báo chí của Mỹ. Nếu các bạn không có cơ hội tiếp xúc với người nước ngoài, thì học từ những người khác thạo tiếng Anh hơn mình, hoặc cùng có sở thích học tiếng Anh. Học từ những người phát ngôn viên chương trình tiếng Anh trên đài và TV. Học từ người phiên dịch cho một đoàn khách nước ngoài mà bạn tình cờ gặp. Học từ một khách du lịch nước ngoài hỏi đường.

Nói tóm lại là bất kỳ ai giỏi tiếng Anh hơn bạn đều có thể trở thành một “trường học”. Nếu bạn tranh thủ được các cơ hội này, bạn sẽ không chỉ hạn chế việc học tiếng Anh vào giờ lên lớp buổi tối khi thầy cô giáo của mình yêu cầu mở vở và đọc theo họ.

2. Học một cách chủ động

Trong thực tế rất nhiều người trong chúng ta thường học ngoại ngữ một cách thụ động: bạn đăng ký một khóa học một tuần hai ba buổi, đến lớp đều đặn và học hết mọi thứ trong sách và làm bài theo lời cô giáo dặn. Cái mà ít người làm là biến tiếng Anh thành một kiến thức chủ động, một phần của cuộc sống hàng ngày mà chúng ta thu thập và sử dụng bất kỳ lúc nào có thể và ở mọi nơi.

Tất nhiên là bạn sẽ hỏi: Hàng ngày tôi không tiếp xúc với ai nói tiếng Anh, chả lẽ lại mang tiếng Anh ra để nói chuyện với người Việt? Cái chủ động ở đây theo ý tôi là bạn phải học có mục đích. Bạn học để làm gì và bạn có mục tiêu thế nào. Dựa vào mục tiêu đó, bạn sẽ tìm cơ hội để mình sử dụng cái vốn ngôn ngữ đã tích lũy được.

3. Phải luôn lắng nghe

Một trong những việc quan trọng nhất trong học tiếng Anh là nghe. Người nói tiếng Anh tốt thường là những người thính tai. Trong khía cạnh này học ngoại ngữ cũng không khác học nhạc. Trước đây, khi ngoại ngữ chưa phổ biến ở cấp 2, các trường chuyên ngữ tuyển sinh cấp 3, để phát hiện ra những cá nhân có năng khiếu thường kiểm tra khả năng nghe và nhắc lại.

Thí sinh có năng khiếu không cần phải biết ngoại ngữ mà vẫn có thể nhắc lại từ hoặc cụm từ trong bất kỳ ngôn ngữ nào mà không cần biết từ đó đánh vần như thế nào. Trong việc học ngoại ngữ hàng ngày, người có tai nghe tốt nhận ra từ mới, cách nói khác, cách phát âm chuẩn, và họ nhận ra khi chính bản thân họ mắc lỗi trong cách phát âm, cách nói. Họ học từ hoặc cách nói qua nghe chứ không nhất thiết phải ghi lại hay biết cách đánh vần.

4. Không ngại hỏi, kể cả câu “ngớ ngẩn”

Khi nói chuyện trực tiếp với người khác bằng tiếng Anh, bạn sẽ có cơ hội để hội thoại và trong những trường hợp này tôi gợi ý các bạn nên kết hợp nghe với hỏi. Người Mỹ rất chuộng câu “Chẳng có câu hỏi nào là ngớ ngẩn cả!” Vì thế họ sẽ không đánh giá bạn nếu bạn hỏi “What does that mean?” khi gặp phải từ khó mà bạn không biết.

Nếu bạn không biết một từ đánh vần thế nào (tên riêng chẳng hạn), bạn luôn có thể hỏi “How do you spell that?” Không nên đoán mò. Khi bạn hỏi, người nói có thể sẽ nhắc lại hoặc thay đổi cách diễn đạt để giúp bạn hiểu dễ hơn. Họ cũng có thể sẽ đưa thêm thông tin vào để giải thích kỹ hơn. Phản ứng của người nói sẽ giúp bạn hiểu dễ hơn. Vì vậy, nếu có cơ hội giao tiếp trực tiếp với người bản xứ, đừng ngồi nghe một cách thụ động và để mất cơ hội học quý giá này.

5. Tập thói quen ghi chép

Khi nghe, trong khi học hoặc trong cuộc sống hàng ngày (khi xem phim, nghe đài) các bạn nên tập thói quen ghi chép. Tôi làm phóng viên nhiều năm nên ghi chép là thói quen nghề nghiệp. Song nếu bạn chưa làm việc này, tôi gợi ý bạn mang theo mình cuốn sổ tay nhỏ, thấy từ gì mới và hay ghi lại. Bạn có thể tra từ điển hoặc hỏi người khác cách đọc khi có dịp.

Khi học ngôn ngữ ở thời trẻ thơ chúng ta chẳng ghi chép gì mà vẫn nhớ. Nhưng khi lớn rồi đầu óc chúng ta luôn thu thập thôngtin và phải quên kiến thức cũ thì mới có chỗ cho kiến thức mới. Hơn nữa nhiều người học bằng hình ảnh, nên khi nhìn vào từ sẽ nhớ lâu hơn là chỉ nghe không…

Bạn có thể thấy việc ghi chép khó khăn nếu chúng ta không biết hết từ. Điều đó đúng, nhưng chỉ cần ghi lại từ đó theo cách phát âm mà bạn đoán thôi thì khi hỏi người khác cũng dễ nhớ hơn.

6. Phải nói và nói to rõ ràng

Nếu bạn muốn nói được tiếng Anh, bạn phải nói. Kể cả những câu đơn giản và nói ngay từ khi mới học.Bạn đừng mơ tưởng là bạn sẽ học tốt ngữ pháp, biết nhiều từ hay tăng kỹ năng đọc và nghe rồi tự nhiên một ngày nào đó bạn sẽ giao tiếp tiếng Anh một cách vô tư.
