For Vietnamese, Lunar New year is the most important festival of a year because it is the beginning of a year. Although I am a Vietnamese, I don’t know how families in other parts of my country welcome Tet holiday. My family, an age –old Southern family, usually celebrates Tet as this following way. Tet holiday begins on twenty-ninth of December. We start on decorating our house and preparing food for tet holiday. My father and I are responsible for tidying up our house. Quickly, the house becomes splendid with a very beautiful apricot blossom full of sweet-smelling blooming flowers in the middle of living room. On the branches, we also put some lovely greeting cards which make the tree more beautiful. When we finish our duties, my mother and sister also finish cooking. The kitchen is now full of delicious dishes whose smell float into the air. We usually keep many kinds of food in our kitchen in New Year festival. At lunch, we prepare a big feast to donate the ancestors. At the New Year‘s Eve, our family usually gather together. We watch television or play some traditional games. Until the clock strikes twelve tones to signal the moment of a new year, we donate the ancestors again. Then, my sister and I say “happy new year” to my parents and get lucky money from them. Next, we have a big meal to welcome New Year. Although all of us say nothing about our senses at that time, I know every body is cheerful and hopes for a lucky year. Today I’m going to tell you about one of the biggest, oldest traditional festival and has the widest popular range in Vietnam, which is Tet Holiday.

Tet marks (=celebrates) the arrival of spring and is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture and it has the date falling in (which falls in) = takes place around late January or early February according to the Lunar Calendar.

Tết is also an occasion for family reunions. When Tet comes around the corner, most Vietnamese people return to their families to visit their family members, to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of their ancestors in their homeland as a sign of respect.

Many Vietnamese people prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday food which includes giò, xôi, canh măng anh banh chung - an indispensable (= absolutely necessary) dish that is tightly packed sticky with meat and mung beans filling, wrapped in banana leaves

Traditionally, every household is decorated by yellow apricot blossoms (hoa mai) in the central and the southern parts of Vietnam; or peach blossoms (hoa đào) in the northern part.

Many customs are practiced around Tet. Children often receive a red envelope containing money from their elders after giving them traditional Tet greetings. During Tet days people also visit relatives and friends to wish them all a happy new year. Local pagodas are popular spots as well, as people go there to wish for a better year to come for their families.

Tet holiday is the only occasion that people that people start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year.
