Owing to the benefits of an excellent care and the faster achivement of goals, the trend of having a small-sized family is on the uprise around the globe now. However, there is also a social belief that having a more male child was a symbol of inheriting fortune in near future. This essay will outline some of the merits and drawbacks of extended family.

To begin with, there had been a time-honoured culture adopted by the royal, dukes or lords for instance; where having more children means more opportunities to maintain the family name, as there was a constant war for territorial ownership, and any of the siblings would fall in the battle. Later, this idea is followed with the thoughts that, in the timed of need, helping hands are always possible in large family. To live together under one roof, more people are around to help, which can prevent serious issues, such as death or attack, especially with people with debilitating diseases, for example, hypertension and asthma.

On the other hand, in a multigenerational family, too many individuals with different lifestyles living in the same space may create inconveniences and conflicts. Imagine how having to share the bathroom with not only one's siblings but also their cousins or uncles, it could be extremely frustrating. The small family, by comparison, ensures that each person can use the facilities in the house comfortably.

In conclusion, it is evidently clear that there are several plus points of owning an extended family, however, in a nuclear family, children can be given the higher-quality education and better health care services.
