It is always thought that women are the second class in citizen, and men are the first. There is not real equality of opportunity for men and women. Years ago, people were living in a man-dominated society. Women had to obey their husbands and fathers absolutely.  Women’s place was in the kitchen and women’s work was housework. In many places, women were not even allowed to go to school. Women had no rights, even the right to choose a husband for themselves. Men usually occupied high positions in society so they thought they were intelligent and important than women. Men considered women their property. Sometimes, women were mistreated by their husbands and suffered this as a fate. Many parents did not even want to have female children.

Thanks to the women’s liberation movement, women have nowadays proved that they are equal to men on every aspect. Philadelphia is a city known for many things. It is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, and it was also the first capital of the United States. But one fact about Philadelphia is not so well-known: it is home to nearly 3,000 murals painted on the sides of homes and buildings around the city. In fact, it is said that Philadelphia has more murals than any other city in the world, with the exception of Rome. How did this come to be?

More than 20 years ago, a New Jersey artist named Jane Golden started a program pairing troubled youth with artists to paint murals on a few buildings around the city. From this small project, something magical happened. The young people involved helped to create magnificent pieces of art, but there were other, perhaps more important benefits. The young people learned to collaborate and get along with many different kinds of people during the various steps required to paint and design a mural. They learned to be responsible, because they needed to follow a schedule to make sure the murals were completed. They also learned to take pride in their community. Take a walk around some of the poorest neighbourhoods in Philadelphia, full of broken windows and littered front steps, and you will find beautiful works of art on the sides and fronts of buildings.

To raise awareness of ASEAN and promote cultural exchanges between the youths of Korea and ASEAN, the ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC) regularly organises an ASEAN School Tour Programme. Organised by the government of Japan and supported by the governments of Southeast Asia, this journey will last for 50 days and will bring together over 300 youths from ASEAN countries and Japan. They will also receive training to help them develop problem- solving and leadership. skills. The journey starts in Japan and participants travel to five ASEAN countries.
