Once there is a boy who lived with his mother. They were very poor and had only a bit of land to make a living by growing grain. One day, the mother went to the market as usual. She asked if the boy want anything. The boy's eyes went wide with delight. He said: "More than anything else, I want a drum!"

But the leftover money after the mother bought necessities wasn't enough to buy a drum. The boy wanted a drum so badly, but there was nothing she could do. However, on the way back home, his mother found a fine sk. It was still better than nothing, right? She was smiling badly while she was handing the gift to her son. The boy decided to not be disappointed. Instead of that, he thanks his mother, tapped, slapped, banged on every object with his new sk.

Then he saw his neighbor trying to light her smoked stove. Her eyes watered and she coughed so much. The boy, without hesitation, gave the sk to his neighbor. "Here Auntie, use my sk to heat your stove"- he said. When the stove was OK and hot perfectly, she baked him a soft, round roti, a traditional Indian cake.

The boy was looking for a shaded place to ẹnjoy the roti when he heard a baby crying. The baby was hungry but her mother had no food. The boy immediately told the mother to feed her baby his roti. The baby ate the warm, delicious cake. The woman insisted the boy take a large, metal jug as her gratefulness. What a gift! It dinged a real drum!

He almost didn't see someone was groaning from a roadside ditch. An old man wearing torn clothes was laying in the dust. The boy ran as quickly as he could to fill the jug with water. The man drink water from the jug and told his story: "I am a trader, but robbers stole my goods." He just had 2 horses, and they were standing by a tree. The boy also gave water to them. He offered that the trader could take his jug to trade. The old man was thankful so he urge the boy to take one of his horses. "It was a rich gift!" the boy thought.

The boy climbed on the horse and rode happily down the streets. He crossed a group of men sitting under a tree. They were beautifully dressed, unfortunately, they looked miserable. The boy asked if there is a problem. One young man said: "I'm going to my wedding, where this band will perform. But if I show up on foot, my bride will laugh at me" The boy hopped off the horse and handed the reins to the groom. He thought that he had a whole life without a horse. The young man needed it more than he did! The musicians leaped up and sang. A singer stopped to thank the boy for his kindness. In exchange, he deserved a beautiful drum.

The boy shouted with joy. He tapped the drum the whole way home. His mother came out to see what the noise was. The boy told her about the story of the sk, a roti, a jug, a horse, and a drum.

Chúc bạn hok tốt nhé

Geogre Orwell did not expect to be a successful writer. In fact, he (1)…spent…… much of his life anticipating failure. In an essay about his schooldays, wrote that until he was about thirty he always planned his life with the (2)……expectation…… that any major undertaking was bound to fail. He wanted success and worked hard to (3)…achieve.. it but he was never quite able to give up the (4)…notion.. that his efforts would always come up short. At the age of 46, (5) …shortly……….. before he died, confided in his private notebook that a deep (6)…………. Of inadequacy had haunted him throughout his career. He stated that there had been (7)…literally……. Not one day in which he did not feel that he was miserably small. Even in the first months after the tremendous success of “ Animal Farm”, he was quick to (9)…… discount…… his achievement, declaring that his next book was bound to be a failure.Of course, no conscientious author is ever completely (10)……satisfied…….. with their work, but Orwell’s doubts were so (11)… persistent…… that he often appeared more comfortable (12)……admitting ……. defeat than acknowledging success. In 1940, after the publication of his eighth book, he (13) ……responded …….. to an admiring letter from another writer by (14)……going…… out of his way to show the man why he was not (15)…worthy…… of his practice. “ It makes me laugh” he wrote, “ to see you referring to me as “ famous” and “ successful”. I wonder if you (16)……appreciate……. How little my books sell !

Read the following story and write true (T) or false (F).

When Dave was young, he played a lot of games, and he was thin and strong, but when he was forty-five, he began to get fat and slow. He was not able to breathe as well as before, and when he walked rather fast, his heart beat painfully.

He did not do anything about this for a long time, but finally he became anxious and went to see a doctor, and the doctor sent him to a hospital. Another young doctor examined him there and said, " I don't want to mislead you, Mr. Dave. You are very ill, and I believe that you are unlikely to live much longer. Would you like me to arrange for anybody to come and see you before you die?

Dave thought for a few seconds and then he answered, "I'd like another doctor to come and see me".
