A Village Festival Day

I live in a small village in northern Viet Nam. Every year, people in my village look forward to the third day of Tet. It is one of our most important festival days.

In the morning, we gather along the riverside to watch some competitions. First, there is a special boat race. Some team members cook rice on the boat while others row the boat as fast as they can. The fastest team with well-cooked rice wins the race. Then, the referee releases a duck into the middle of the river. Contestants jump into the river to catch it. The atmosphere becomes loud with the sound of drums and cheers of festival goers.

At noon, there is a village party at the communal house for the elders. Each family also holds a home party. We cook traditional dishes like sticky rice and steamed chicken. Sometimes, we include food that children love, such as bun cha or even pizzas!

The village festival helps us maintain our traditions, connect with other people, and strengthen our family bonds.

MY VILLAGE We are Khmer Krom, one of the biggest ethnic groups in the south of Viet Nam. We live by farming mostly rice and fishing on the Mekong River. Life is sometimes hard as our work depends heavily on the weather. When it is not harvest time, the men of the village go fishing from early morning and don t return until late afternoon. By the time they return, most of the village women will be waiting for them on the river bank. They wait to buy the fish, which they will later sell at the local market or bring to the nearby town for a higher price. We children will be there too. We love running around the beach and waiting for the boats to come in. Our most important festival of the year is the Chol Chnam Thmay, which celebrates the New Year. It falls mid April. I live in a small village called Vinh An. There are about 700 people here. I love the village because it is very quiet and life is slow and easy. You have never to queue in shops or banks.
People never throw rubbish in the streets, so the village is always clean – people often look after it with great care. The air is always fresh too. The people here are much more friendly here than in a city because everyone knows everyone else, and if someone has a problem, there are always people who can help.However, there is one thing I don't like about my village is that there is not much to do in the evening. We haven't got any cinemas or theaters. But I still prefer village life to life in a big city
