Inventing the future
Imagine you can change the world by asking yourself three questions: What do I love? What am I good at? What do I want to change? What do I want to change?
The Google Science Fair is a competition for teenagers aged 13 to 18. It wants them to create a project by thinking about these questions. Google hopes this competition is going to find the world’s next great scientist.
Brittany Wenger, 17, found a way to improve the accuracy of a cancer- testing computer program. This program is successful about 97 percent of the time. Unlike other similar programs, Brittany’s program is “trained”. When her program does tests, it learns from experience and becomes better. Brittany plans to introduce her invention to hospitals one day. She also volunteers with a group called Made with Code. She shows other girls how they can achieve their dreams through computer programming.
Turkish teenager Elif Bilgin wants to reduce pollution. So, she spent two years doing research on making plastic from other kinds of materials. She wanted to make a new kind of plastic that people can use in everyday life. Now, she found a way to make plastic using banana peels! Some companies are using Elif’s plastic to make artificial body parts. Elif hopes that her plastic is going to replace normal plastic in the future.

II/ Read the passage about clothes, then answer the questions below.
Clothes can tell a lot about a person. Some people like very colorful clothes because they want everyone to look at them and they want to be the center of things. Other people like to wear nice clothes, but their clothes are not colorful or fancy. They do not like people to look at them. Clothes today are very different from the clothes of the 1800s. One difference is the way they look. For example, in the 1800s all women wore dresses. The dresses all had long skirts.
But today women do not always wear dresses with long skirts .Sometimes they wear short skirts. Sometimes they wear pants. Another difference between1800s and today is the cloth. In the 1800s, clothes were made only from natural kinds of cloth. They were made from cotton, wool, silk, or linen. But today, there are many kinds of man–made cloth. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 30 to 34.
Tourism and Heritage Protection Travelling is a great thing to do. It helps us learn about different people and different places. Some people travel because they want to see nature. Others travel because they want to make friends and try great food. Of course, a lot of tourists are interested in traditional culture.
Tourism can be very good for traditional cultures. This is because when people travel to another country, they often want to learn more about that country’s traditions, such as music, food, and history. Therefore, the local people in that country will keep their traditional culture alive. They will wear traditional clothing, and sell traditional food. They will also have shows for tourists. These shows can be dances, concerts, plays, or something else.
Tourism also helps people respect each other. If you understand another culture well, you will probably respect that culture much more. You will probably want to protect that culture as well. However, tourism is not always good for traditional culture. Many people say that tourism creates “fake traditional culture”. This means that the local people wear traditional costumes, and do traditional dances only for tourists, but that is not their real lifestyle. Their real lifestyles are similar to the tourists’ lifestyle. They are just pretending because they want to make money.
The word “fake” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. real
B. not real
C. very good
D. very bad
