Indian Festival

The Milwaukee Native American Indian Festival is truly and amazing event. For three days in September every year, thousands gather in Milwaukee, USA, to celebrate Indian culture. Last year, I was lucky enough to attend the festival and experience it for myself.

The preparations take months. Dance teams from all over the country practise to compete in the tribal Pow Wow dance contest. Indian craftsmen work to produce the many traditional items on display. Then, in the week before the festival, the stalls are put up and the food is prepared, so that everything will be ready for the big day.

The celebrations began at 4pm and there was plenty to see and do. I visited a traditional Indian village, watched skilled craftsmen carve totem poles, and even learned how to do tribal Indian dancing. It was also a great opportunity to sample some traditional native dishes, like corn bread and buffalo burgers.

The festival was fun, entertaining and educational. It was a wonderful way to learn about Native American culture and celebrate the end of summer.

In Vietnam the Mid-Autumn Festival, known as Tet Trung Thu in Vietnamese, is one of the country's mostimportant holidays, along with Vietnamese Lunar New Year, and National Day, etc. Tet Trung Thu usually takes place on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. In 2014, it was on September 8th.

The traditions surrounding this holiday date back thousands of years, and they place a huge emphasis onchildren. It is thought that the festival was originally celebrated to give parents time to catch up with their children after the summer harvest was completed. Children were believed to be the purest and most innocent, and thus they were the closest connection to the sacred and natural world.

The Mooncake Festival

Today, the approach of Mid-Autumn is signaled by the appearance of stalls selling mooncakes all over the country's streets. These cakes are very rich and are often filled with varied ingredients. Mooncakes are the most important traditional food related to Tet Trung Thu, and they are extremelyly popular.

Year by year, the Mid-Autumn mooncake stands increase in number. Boxes of mooncakes are often presented as gifts before the approaching of the holiday.

Perhaps the best place in Vietnam to observe Tet Trung Thu is Hoi An, a historical town in the central region of the country. The town is densely packed with shops, providing a prime target for lion dancers. The river running through town is covered in floating lanterns, and the atmosphere is extremely magical.

In other parts of Vietnam, the festival is largely enjoyed by children and young people. The kids go around the local areas with different types of lanterns in hands, whereas the youth prefer to go out with friends to have a dinner or a few drinks.

Occasionally we might even see a dragon, the most sacred of all animals, which is controlled by well trained dancers. The dance often attracts a huge crowd, and once in a while the man who carries the animal's head set off a firework through the dragon's mouth and thrilling the crowd. It is a MUST that this tradition needs to be kept alive.

In my daily life, in addition to class lessons and activities at home, I also participate in community activities. In the area where I live there is a group of young volunteers specializing in community affairs, and I am also a member of the group. We have a lot of jobs for the community, such as helping the elderly with their jobs, or raising fund for people and groups in difficulty. We also form groups to remove trash on the street on weekends to keep the streets clean. And many other actions. We do these activities with the aim of keeping the community growing, improving and people in need die. Being able to do these activities, I, like everyone else, feel very happy that I can contribute a small part of my effort to the community. That will encourage us to do even better things. Hopefully, in this big world, everyone knows how to help each other, and if they know how to look towards the community, how beautiful life will be.

In our culture, there are many festivals, but I like most the rice-cookinh festival.

This festival is held every two years. But this year,it was held earlier than before. It was held in a communal house yard. This festival took one day.I joined in it with my family.

In this festival, there were three team, each team has six members and there were three contests : water-fetching ; fire-making ; rice-cooking.

In the water-fetching contest, every member from each team had to take one of bottles from a river bank one kilometer away and come back to the starting position

And in the fire-making contest, two members of each team had to make fire by rubbing the pieces of bamboo, the fire is made in the traditional way and the winners are the first team made fire.

Next,in the rice-cooking contest, six members of each team had to seperate the rice from the husk and cook the rice.

Finally, the judges ate the rice of each team, and the winner is the most delicious rice and the grand prize was awarded for my village. We were very happy and felt very excited. What a wonderful festival !

The festival is most crowded from the 15th - 20th day of the 2nd month of the lunar calendar as this period marks the main festival. The mountainous path leading from Ngoai pagoda to Trong pagoda is full of visitors coming up and down. A pilgrimage to the Huong Pagoda is not only for religious reasons but also to see the numerous natural shapes that are typical of the landscape and the buildings that are valuable artifacts of the nation.

All of the special holidays in my country, I like Tet the most. Tet is an occasion to everyone get together in warm atmosphere. Before Tet holiday, Everyone prepares many things and decorates their house. I plant a lot of flowers in front of my house and buy many things such as clothes, foods ...

Besides, most of the streets also are decorated beautifully with colorful lights and flowers. During Tet, I spends more time on visiting my relatives, friends and colleagues. Especially, I give to each other the best wishes for the new year. Tet is an opportunity for children receive lucky money. There is a funny thing that people try to avoid argument or saying any bad things at Tet. I love Tet holiday!
