“Mùa xuân đầu tiên” là bài hát trở lại của Văn Cao sau gần 20 năm tuyên bố gác bút, trong một hoàn cảnh đặc biệt, đó là mùa xuân năm 1976 - mùa xuân thống nhất đầu tiên của dân tộc; và cứ như vậy, nhạc sĩ Văn Cao đã để lại cho đời một nhạc phẩm xuất sắc. Theo lời tâm sự của Văn Cao, nếu như “Tiến quân ca” là bản nhạc đưa những người lính ra trận thì “Mùa xuân đầu tiên” là bản nhạc đón những người lính trở về trong một khát vọng sum họp và đoàn tụ. Ca khúc còn gửi gắm một tư tưởng lớn về hòa hợp dân tộc, tôn vinh một hạnh phúc giản dị và đời thường của hòa bình: “Rồi dặt dìu mùa xuân theo én về. Mùa bình thường mùa vui nay đã về/ Mùa xuân mơ ước ấy đang đến đầu tiên với khói bay trên sông, gà đang gáy trưa bên sông/ Một trưa nắng vui cho bao tâm hồn”. “Mùa xuân đầu tiên” cũng là một ca khúc được viết theo điệu Valse, một điệu thức trước đó nhiều lần được Văn Cao sử dụng qua các nhạc phẩm khác. Nhưng với bản Valse mùa xuân này, tưởng như đây là một điệu khiêu vũ dặt dìu bất tận trong niềm hạnh phúc khôn nguôi, khi những giọt nước mắt lặng lẽ rơi xuống nghẹn ngào trong cả người nghe, người hát và chính người sáng tác: “Nước mắt trên vai anh, giọt rơi ấm đôi vai anh/ Niềm vui phút giây như đang long lanh”. Xóa bỏ thù hận, chỉ còn lại yêu thương, tin cậy và cùng nhau hướng về tương lai. Một tư tưởng sâu sắc được viết ra bằng những lời ca giản dị mà lay động lòng người: “Từ đây người biết quê người/ Từ đây người biết thương người/ Từ đây người biết yêu người”. Mùa xuân đầu tiên cũng có thể xem là ca khúc nổi tiếng cuối cùng trong sự nghiệp sáng tác của Văn Cao, dù sau đó ông có viết thêm hai bài: “Hành khúc công nhân toa xe” (1983) và “Tình khúc trung du” (1984).
