The more waste we produce, the more disposal trucks, labor and dump space are needed. All these cost money. That’s why we must learn to use less, and to reuse and recycle so that less waste is produced. Recyclable wastes include paper, glass, plastic and metals. When you go shopping, do not buy over-packaged products. If you have to buy heavily packaged products, do not throw away the packaging, use it for another purpose. For example, paper bags can be used for carrying other things, or for mak...

Every day of the year throughout the world, about twenty million paper bags and newspapers are screwed and thrown away. Making paper requires a lot of wood pulp and the work of millions of workers. Many countries have had plans to recycle waste paper to save money and labor. In countries where there is the cooperation of the public, paper mills recycle as much as sixty percent of waste paper. Their simple work is to take away the ink, crush it up and make it into pulp again. For every ton of recycled newsprint, twelve trees can be saved. We can insist that the more paper people save, the more trees are preserved.

VI. Read the text below and look carefully at each numbered line. Some of the lines are correct, and some have a word which should not be there. If the line is correct, put a tick (√) by the number. If the line has a word which should not be there, write that word by the number. There are two examples at the beginning (0 and 00). (5pts)

A load of rubbish

Line

In the UK, people are finally starting to listen to the message about recycling. British families now recycle about 22% of their waste. Only for five years ago, the figure was 10%. That’s good news for the environment- but there’s a lot more than to do. Some other European countries, like Germany and Holland, already recycle about 60% of their waste and that’s the goal for the UK.

Households in England which produce 25 million tons of waste a year. More than half of this is garden waste, paper, cardboard and kitchen waste – with which people could recycle. They could also recycle plastic, wood, glass and aluminum cans. In fact, if everybody in the UK was recycled all of their drink cans, there would be 14 million fewer rubbish bins of waste each year.

Recycling isn’t the only way to reduce the amount of rubbish what we throw away. More than 40% of the waste in our bins is packaging from shopping. If we changed the way to we shop, we could easily reduce the amount of waste. For example, street markets and small shops often use less packaging than supermarkets. And being of course, if we grow our own vegetables, there wouldn’t be any packaging at all.

Three ways everyone can help make the Earth a greener place is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

When people reduce it means they are using (46)________ of something. This allows us to create less waste. Turning off the faucet when we brush our teeth is a simple way to reduce. This is a small action that prevents us from wasting (47)________.

Another small action people can take is to reuse things we already have. Taking bags to the store (48)________ we shop for food is one way to reuse them. Using both (49)________ of piece of paper before getting a new one is another way to reuse.

(50)________ is when new materials are created from old ones. Paper, plas, and metal are all materials that can be recycled. Things newspapers, soda cans, and plas bags can all be turned into new objects if we take the time to recycle them!
