6. When a t___________ touches down, it can destroy everything in its path
Read the passage carefully, then choose the correct answers.
A tsunami is a natural disaster more devastating than earthquakes, tornadoes or any other disaster you can think of. Tsunami is a Japanese word that means harbor wave. A tsunami happens when huge waves are formed after something under the ocean occurs to make these large waves form. Erupting volcanoes can also cause tsunamis to occur. The waves start in one area but they move quickly in all different directions once the tsunami begins. Tsunamis begin as an under the water earthquake. The force of the earth moving causes the water to move and produce huge waves. Waves from tsunami cam travel through the water as fast as 500 miles per hour. As they approach the coast, they continue to grow in size before smashing down on the cities and towns along the coastline. These waves can often be as high as 100 feet, causing much destruction.
32. What is a tsunami?
a. A series of huge waves c. A sudden gust of wind b. A storm with strong winds d. A violent shaking of earth's surface
33. Which is the most diastrous, according to the passage?
a. Earthquake b. Tornado c. Tsunami d. hurricane
34. Which can cause a tsunami to occur?
a. Droughts b. Floods c. Hurricanes d. Volcanic eruptions
35. What happens to a tsunami as it approaches the coast?
a. It changes direction.
b. It decreases the height.
c. It grows in size.
d. It moves more quickly
36. What happens when a tsunami hits land?
a. It devastates coastal regions.
b. It causes underwater earthquake.
c. It blows everything out to sea.
d. It sucks up everything in its path.

You can recycle many types of glass. Glass food and beverage containers can be reused and recycled many times. (In fact, only bulbs, ceramic glass, dishes and window glass can’t be recycled.)
Glass is made from soda ash, sand and lime. If it’s thrown away, it stays there indefinitely because glass never breaks down into its original ingredients. To be recycled, glass is sorted by color, crushed into small pieces and melted down into a liquid. Then, it is molded into new glass containers.
When people recycle glass, they ………………..
A. sort it by color and crush it into small pieces
B. melt it into containers
C. mold it into containers
D. all are correct
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
The ability of falling cats to right themselves in midair and land on their feet has been a source of wonder for ages. Biologists long regarded it as an example of adaptation by natural selection, but for physicists it bordered on the miraculous.
Newton's laws of motion assume that the total amount of spin of a body cannot change unless an external torque speeds it up or slows it down. If a cat has no spin when it isreleased and experiences no external torque, it ought not to be able to twist around as it falls.
In the speed of its execution, the righting of a tumbling cat resembles a magician's trick. The gyrations of the cat in midair are too fast for the human eye to follow, so the process is obscured. Either the eye must be speeded up, or the cat's fall slowed down for the phenomenon to be observed. A century ago the former was accomplished by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any pharmacy. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat constituted a scientific experiment.
The experiment was described in a paper presented to the Paris Academy in 1894. Two sequences of twenty photographs each, one from the side and one from behind, show a white cat in the act of righting itself. Grainy and quaint though they are, the photos show that the cat was dropped upside down, with no initial spin, and still landed on its feet. Careful analysis of the photos reveals the secret; as the cat rotates the front of its body clockwise, the rear and tail twist counterclockwise, so that the total spin remains zero, in perfect accord with Newton's laws. Halfway down, the cat pulls in its legs before reversing its twist and then extends them again, with the desired end result. The explanation was that while nobody can acquire spin without torque, a flexible one can readily change its orientation, or phase. Cats know this instinctively, but scientists could not be sure how it happened until they increased the speed of their perceptions a thousandfold
Which of the following can be inferred about high-speed photography in the late 1800's?
A. It was a relatively new technology
B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain
C. The resulting photographs are difficult to interpret
D. It was not fast enough to provide new information
Đáp án A
Thông tin: A century ago the former was accomplished by means of high-speed photography using equipment now available in any pharmacy. But in the nineteenth century the capture on film of a falling cat constituted a scientific experiment.
Phương án A. It was a relatively new technology = nó là một công nghệ rất mới, là phương án chính xác nhất.
B. The necessary equipment was easy to obtain = Các thiết bị cần thiết là dễ dàng để có được.
Đó là khi ở thế kỷ XX thì các thiết bị cần thiết mới dễ dàng có được, chứ cuối những năm 1800 thì không.
C. The resulting photographs are difficult to interpret = Những hình ảnh thu được rất khó để giải thích.

VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR I. Match a word in column A with its description in column B, writing the answer in each blank. Answer A B ______ 1. A thunderstorm A. It is created when the surface layer of the ground collapses. It varies in size and are found all over the world. It is an area of ground that has no natural external surface drainage. When it rains, all of the water stays inside it and typically drains into the subsurface. It can vary from a few feet to hundreds of acres and from less than 1 to more than 100 feet deep. ______ 2. A tornado B. The Earth has a crust under the oceans and the land that we live on. This crust made of massive areas of flat rock called tectonic plates, which float on the Earth’s mantle, the inside layer of the Earth. When the plates move slowly together, this movement forces energy through the crusts to the Earth’s surface. The energy causes the Earth to tremble and shake. ______ 3. A hurricane C. It is a very bright flash of electricity that happens in a thunderstorm. It is actually a spark that crosses the gap between two clouds or between a cloud and the Earth. It carries an enormous charge of electricity. Trees are burned, metal can be melted and people can be killed. ______ 4. An earthquake D. It is caused by earthquakes at sea. It forms when energy from an earthquake displace hundreds of cubic kilometers of water from the seabed. Large waves begin moving through the ocean from their epicenters. When it reaches shallow water near coastal areas, it increases in height. The sign comes before it strikes when the waterline suddenly retreats, exposing hundreds of meters of beach and seabed. ______ 5. A volcano E. It is a very violent windstorm. The air is concentrated and whirls up rapidly. It is grey in colour and looks like an elephant’s trunk swaying down from the clouds to touch the ground with its tip. ______ 6. A tsunami F. It is a hill or mountain formed when molten material or lave from the inside of the Earth is forced through the Earth’s crust by gases. It can produce vast clouds of very fine volcanic dust which looks like smoke. ______ 7. A sinkhole G. It is a storm where you hear thunder and see lightning. There is usually heavy rain. It is an electric storm. ______ 8. Lightning H. It is the most violent storm known on Earth. It is a tropical storm. It forms at sea and causes dangerous, stormy seas. It can reach the land and destroy buildings and trees. It can blow high waves onto the land and cause flooding. II.
