Subject: Giving up swimming

You know my parents have been taking me to swimming training every morning for three years, and I’ve won lots of competitions? Well, now I want to stop swimming. It takes too much of my time, and I want to do other things. But how can I tell my parents?

What do you think I should do?

Hi Corey,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. I can understand why you feel like stopping swimming. Three years of daily training is a huge commitment, and it makes sense that you’d want time to explore other things.

I think the best way to approach your parents is to be honest but respectful. They’ll probably be proud of what you’ve achieved so far, so you could start by thanking them for their support and reminding them how much you’ve gained from the experience. Then, explain that your interests are changing and you’d like to try new activities. If you show them that you’ve thought carefully about it, they’ll be more likely to understand.

Maybe you could also suggest swimming less often instead of quitting immediately, so the change isn’t too sudden. This way, your parents will see that you’re being responsible and not just giving up.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Best, Anh
