Dr. Jonas Salk is credited with developing the first vaccine to fight against the dreaded polio. Born in New York in 1914, Salk received his medical degree from New York University College of Medicine in 1939 and later attended the School of Public Heath at the University of Michigan.
Salk was very interested in preventive medicine. He worked for the army on producing a vaccine against influenza for five years from 1942 to 1947. In 1949, a group at Harvard University led by John Enders developed a method to grow the polio virus in quantity so that it could be studied further. This discovery was important as it allowed Salk and his fellow workers to study the disease in greater detail.
By 1952, Salk’s group had successfully tested a polio vaccine using an inactive polio virus. In 1954, there were field tests done on a large scale. Initially, there were many different vaccines being used among the public, and there were some deaths associated with the vaccinations. However, Salk’s vaccine proved to be the best and was used without further problems. What was once a dreaded killer had been tamed by the work of Dr. Jonas Salk and co-workers.

Polyester is now being used for bottles. ICI., the chemicals and plastics company, believes that it is now beginning to the grip of glass on the bottles business and thus take advantage of this huge market.
All the plastics manufacturers have been experiencing hard times as their traditional products have been doing badly worldwide for the last few years. Between 1982 and 1984 the Plastics Division of ICI had lost a hundred and twenty million dollars and they fell that the most hopeful new market was in packaging, bottles and cans.
Since 1982 it has opened there new factories producing “Melinar”, the raw material from which high quality polyester bottles are made.
The polyester bottle was born in the 1970s, when soft drink companies like Coca Cola started selling their drinks in giant two-litre containers. Because of the build-up the pressure of gas in these large containers, glass was unsuitable. Nor was PVC, the plastic which had been used for bottles since the 1960s, suitable for drinks with gas in them. A new plastic had to the made.
Glass is still cheaper for the smaller bottles, and will continue to be so unless oil and plastic become much cheaper, but plastic does well for the larger sizes.
Polyester bottles are virtually unbreakable. The manufacturers claim they are also lighter also, less noisy when being handled, and can be re-used. Shopkeepers and other business people are unlikely to object to a change from glass to polyester, since these bottles mean few breakages, which are costly and time- consuming. The bottles with interesting shapes, to try and make them visually more attractive to the public.
The next step could be to develop a plastic which could replace tins for food. The problem here is the high temperatures necessary for cooking the food in the container.

Although party invitations no longer frightened me, I still found myself making careful preparations for this particular party. I got a hair-cut. laid out my best suit, selected a special, tie, and cuff links. I had recently gone on a diet, but because I didn’t want to look too thin. I discontinued it. What should I bring my hosts? Flowers? What kind of wine? Sherry? Or possibly even champagne? Meeting new people was still a major undertaking.
It was scheduled for this Saturday and I decided to take a cab to the suburb where it was being held. It was early autumn and the weather had been mild, but that morning it turned cold and rainy, and as I listened to the steam hissing in my radiator, it already felt like midwinter. Trees, visible from my window, covered will foliage only yesterday, had become bare overnight. Churning clouds augured a further change in the weather. From my new paper I learned that a hurricane which had already struck another state as on its way to New York, though it might veer out to sea. The storm left destruction in its wake. In one village an entire cottage was sheared from its foundation and blown into the ocean together with its occupants.
As I lay in bed the morning of the party, I envisioned a change also taking place in me. A loose tooth which hadn’t bothered me suddenly sent a stabbing pain through my jaw. Ordinarily I’m not to headaches, but I awoke with a dull ache on the left side of my head. Several disturbing dreams had given me a restless night, though 1 could only remember them vaguely. In one dream I recalled shouting at someone and being involved in a light. There was also something about an animal, but what it was I couldn’t recollect. VII. For question 71 – 75, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits best according to the text.
Half of the planet’s population lives in cites, yet they consume 75% of the world’s resources and create most of its pollution. This means that all governments are going to have to create effective recycling plans. In cities where recycling schemes have been successful, it is possible to recycle 95% of all household waste. It takes 30 – 40% less energy to make paper from recycled materials than it does to make it from trees. Statistics show that there is a growing awareness of the importance of recycling, and countries such as Sweden already recycle much of their waste.
As the burning of fossil fuel is a major cause of pollution we will have to turn to other energy sources and what could be a better source than the sun? Solar energy is getting cheaper and can produce power even in cloudy conditions. The Japanese have already developed solar-electric roof tiles which are going to make entire buildings self-sufficient, greatly cutting down the need for fossil fuel.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Earth orbits the sun while the moon orbits Earth. Occasionally, all three of them become aligned with one another. When this happens, an eclipse occurs. There are two types of eclipses: solar and lunar. Both are rare events simply because, due to the movement of all three celestial bodies, the times when they line up with one another are infrequent.
Solar eclipses are easily the more spectacular of the two. For a solar eclipse to occur, the moon's orbit must take it between Earth and the sun. While the sun is much larger than the moon, the relative nearness of the moon to Earth makes it appear to be the same size as the sun when viewed from the ground. Thus, when the sun, Earth, and moon are perfectly aligned, the moon appears to cover the entire sun. This is a solar eclipse. A solar eclipse may be either total or partial. When a total eclipse happens, the sun is completely obscured by the moon. The sky darkens, and it appears to be night time. However, most solar eclipses are partial ones. When they take place, the sun is only partly covered by the moon.
When a solar eclipse happens, it is observable from a fairly small area on the planet. Thus, when there is a solar eclipse in North America, it is highly unlikely that it will be visible in Africa or Australia. A solar eclipse only lasts for a few minutes since all three heavenly bodies are in continual motion. People must also take care when viewing a solar eclipse since looking directly at it can cause damage - including blindness - to their eyes.
Lunar eclipses happen when Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon. When this occurs, the planet blocks sunlight from reflecting off the moon. Lunar eclipses take place at night. During one, the moon appears very orange and is practically red in color. There are two different types of lunar eclipses. Taken together, the result is that lunar eclipses happen more frequently than solar eclipses. In addition, lunar eclipses may last for hours and can be seen from a wider area on the planet. There is no harm in directly observing a lunar eclipse either, so looking at one will not damage a person's eyes.
28. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How eclipses have affected history B. Two types of eclipses
C. The problems eclipses cause D. Solar eclipses
29. What is the word ‘spectacular’ in line 5 closest in meaning to?
A. distinct B. impressive C. lost lasting D. common
30. Why is the moon able to cover the sun during a solar eclipse?
A. Because of its large size B. Because of its brightness
C. Because of its closeness to Earth D. Because of its rotation
31. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about solar eclipses?
A. How they can harm people
B. How long they may last
C. How much of the sun cannot be seen during them
D. How often they happen
32. What can be inferred from the passage about lunar eclipses?
A. It is possible to see them from everywhere in the world.
B. They are less dangerous to people than solar eclipses.
C. Superstitious people believe they bring bad luck.
D. During a full moon, they can be extremely bright.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
The changing roles of the modern father
Fathers used to act as the ‘breadwinner’ of their family, and as the teacher of moral and religious values. Today, however, those roles are gradually changing.
Changes in economic roles
More and more women are going out to work and earn money. This increases the budget of the family. Apart from that, there are various social welfare programmes which financially assist mothers in supporting their children. Both these changes have greatly impacted the role of fathers because they make paternal financial support less essential for many families.
Changes in caregiving roles
With the burden of financial support reduced, and with a changing concept of a father’s role, modern day fathers tend to be more involved in children’s caregiving. They are now spending more time and energy on their children.
Psychological research across families from all ethnic backgrounds suggests that the influence of a father’s love and attention is as great as that of a mother’s. Fatherly love helps children develop a sense of their place in the world, which helps their social and emotional development. Moreover, children whoreceive more love from their fathers are less likely to have behavioural problems.
This trend is still increasing and its effects will become clearer and clearer in the future, especially in traditionally male-dominated societies.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Earth is richly supplied with different types of living organisms which co-exist in their environments, forming complex, interrelated communities. Living organisms depend on one another for nutrients, shelter, and other benefits. The extinction of one species can set off a chain reaction that affects many other species, particularly if the loss occurs near the bottom of the food chain. For example, the extinction of a particular insect or plant might seem inconsequential. However, there may be fish or small animals that depend on that resource for foodstuffs. The loss can threaten the survival of these creatures and larger predators that prey upon them. Extinction can have a ripple effect that spreads throughout nature.
In addition to its biological consequences, extinction poses a moral dilemma for humans, the only species capable of saving the others. The presence of humans on the planet has affected all other life forms, particularly plants and animals. Human lifestyles have proven to be incompatible with the survival of some other species. Purposeful efforts have been made to eliminate animals that prey on people, livestock, crops, or pose any threat to human livelihoods. Some wild animals have been decimated by human desire for meat, hides, fur, or other body parts with commercial value. Likewise, demand for land, water, and other natural resources has left many wild plants and animals with little to no suitable habitat. Humans have also affected nature by introducing non-native species to local areas and producing pollutants having a negative impact on the environment. The combination of these human-related effects and natural obstacles such as disease or low birthrates has proven to be too much for some species to overcome. They have no chance of survival without human help.
As a result, societies have difficult choices to make about the amount of effort and money they are willing to spend to save imperiled species. Will people accept limits on their property rights, recreational activities, and means of livelihood to save a plant or an animal? Should saving such popular species as whales and dolphins take priority over saving obscure, annoying, or fearful species? Is it the responsibility of humans to save every kind of life form from disappearing, or is extinction an inevitable part of nature, in which the strong survive and the weak perish? These are some difficult questions that people face as they ponder the fate of other species living on this planet.
What does the passage mainly discuss?
A. Humans and endangered species
B. The importance of living organisms
C. Measures to protect endangered species
D. Causes of animal extinction
