THREE POPULAR TOYS
A. LEGO
Ole Kirk Christiansen was a poor carpenter from Denmark who started a bussiness making stepladders, ironing boards and wooden toys with his son Godtfred in 1932. The wooden toys quickly became the most popular product he sold, so in 1934 he decided to concentrate on making them and choose the name LEGO for their company. The word comes from two Denish words, ‘Leg Godt’, meaning ‘playing well’. Coincidentally, in Latin Lego means ‘I put together’. In 1949, instead of the traditional wooden bricks. LEGO started making plastic building bricks which could be ‘locked’ together. However, at that time, plastic toys weren’t very popular and the bricks were only sold in Danmark. In 1954 Christiansen’s son, Godtfred, redesigned the bricks and global success followed.
B. RAZOR SCOOTER
Gino Tsai was the owner of an enormous bicycle factory in Chang Hua, Taiwan. Tsai was a slow walker and didn’t like walking around the factory. He tried riding a bicycle and a traditional scooter, but they were too big and awkward so he spent five years developing a much smaller scooter that could be folded up. Tsai called it the ‘Razor Scooter’. It is made of strong aluminum, which can support a 500 kg load without bending. In the late 1990s, it became a big hit in Japan and since then it has become popular all over the world as a quick, easy and fun way to get around.
C. MONOPOLY
In the 1920s, Charles Darrow was a salesman in Pennsylvania, USA, but he lost his job in the Great Depression. He took various jobs to try to earn some money but none of them lasted long. One day he saw his neighbours playing game in which the aim was to make money by buying and selling houses and hotels. Darrow decided to make a similar game and, with the help of his wife and son, developed a game called Monopoly. He took the game to Parker Brothers, a games manifacturer, who started to produce the game on a large scale. In its first year, 1935, it was America’s best-selling game. Since then, over 500 million people have played Monopoly and now it is the most popular board game in the world.
