Lunar New Year, or Tet, is Vietnam's main holiday. It is the grandestand most important occasion in the year which falls sometime between 19th January and 20th February on the Western calendar. Tet marks the beginning of spring and for agrarianpeople, the start of a new year.

Tet's preparations and celebrations used to be spread over months, but nowadays the holiday is much shorter. A great deal of excitementstill builds up well before Tet. Streets are decorated with coloured lights and red banner. Shops are full ofgoods. People are busy buying gifts, cleaning and decorating their houses and cooking traditional foods.

Homes are often decorated with plants and flowers at this time. Peach blossom is traditional at Tet in the North while apricot blossom is traditional in the South. The kumquat tree with its ripe deep orange fruits is popular throughout the country. One of Tet's most special foods is banh chung, which is made from sticky rice, green beans and fatty pork. Mut, which is candied fruits such as sugared apples, plums or tomatoes, is also popular.

On the days of Tet, everyone tries to be nice and polite to each other. People believe that what they do on the first day of the year will influent their luck during the whole year. Thus, only positive comments should be made. People visit other family members or friends and they exchange New Year's wishes. Children receive their "lucky money” inside red envelopes. Many people go to pagoda to prayfor a happy year for themselves and their families. Both children and adults take part in games and various forms of entertainment. My name is Mai Anh. I am from Viet Nam. I am in my first semester of senior year in Thanh Hoa at Le Quy Don Secondary, . In this memo, I am going to tell you little bit about my background, interests, achievements and my goals.

Background
I was born in a small village called Thanh Hoa.Thanh Hoa is located about 70 kilometers south of the city of Surat which is 8th largest city in India, in the state of Gujarat. I spent my first 16 years of life in Thanh Hoa.Thanh Hoa is famous for temples, textile mills.
My everyday activities included going to school, playing cricket, watching television, and going to temple at the night time.

I spend my first 16 year of life in Bilimora before moving here in Greenville, SC on August 23, 2002 with my family. I started going to South Side Highschool as a sophomore and was enrolled in ESL program for a year. At South Side, I focused on achieving my goals including learning English language, participating in extracurricular activities, and doing well in all my classes. In my junior year, I had joined Math club, Robotics club and also enrolled in few honor classes. Along with school, I also found a part time job at a local restaurant to help my parents financially. Moving in to a new country and settling there (here) was a huge challenge for me and my family.

Interests
I like playing Chess and Cricket. I
always enjoyed reading, writing and doing math. Growing up as a child and until now, (my adulthood) it has been mine (my) and my parents dream for me to become a Doctor or an Engineer.
