Lunar New Year, or Tet, is Vietnam's main holiday. It is the grandestand most important occasion in the year which falls sometime between 19th January and 20th February on the Western calendar. Tet marks the beginning of spring and for agrarianpeople, the start of a new year.

Tet's preparations and celebrations used to be spread over months, but nowadays the holiday is much shorter. A great deal of excitementstill builds up well before Tet. Streets are decorated with coloured lights and red banner. Shops are full ofgoods. People are busy buying gifts, cleaning and decorating their houses and cooking traditional foods.

Homes are often decorated with plants and flowers at this time. Peach blossom is traditional at Tet in the North while apricot blossom is traditional in the South. The kumquat tree with its ripe deep orange fruits is popular throughout the country. One of Tet's most special foods is banh chung, which is made from sticky rice, green beans and fatty pork. Mut, which is candied fruits such as sugared apples, plums or tomatoes, is also popular.

On the days of Tet, everyone tries to be nice and polite to each other. People believe that what they do on the first day of the year will influent their luck during the whole year. Thus, only positive comments should be made. People visit other family members or friends and they exchange New Year's wishes. Children receive their "lucky money” inside red envelopes. Many people go to pagoda to prayfor a happy year for themselves and their families. Both children and adults take part in games and various forms of entertainment. Tet is really a time of fun and festivals throughout the country

Tet is a national and family festival. It is an occasion for every Vietnamese to have a good time while thinking about the last year and the next year. At Tet, spring fairs are organized, streets and public buildings are brightly decorated and almost all shops are crowded with people shopping for Tet. At home, every is tidied, special food is cooked, offerings of food, fresh water, flowers and betel are made on the family altar with burning joss- sticks scenting the air. First-footing is made when the lucky visitor comes and children are given lucky money wrapped in a red tiny envelope. Tet is also a time for peace and love. During Tet, children often behave well and friends, relatives and neighbors give each other best wishes for the new year.

This article is about the Vietnamese holiday. For the 1968 military operation that began on that holiday, see Tết Offensive. For other uses, see Tet (disambiguation). For other traditions of celebrating lunar new year, see Lunar New Year (disambiguation).

Tết ([tet˧˥] or [tɜːt˧˥]), or Vietnamese New Year, is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture. The word is a shortened form of Tết Nguyên Đán, which is Sino-Vietnamese for "Feast of the First Morning of the First Day". Tết celebrates the arrival of spring based on the Vietnamese calendar, which usually has the date falling in January or February.[1]

Tết is generally celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year, except when the one-hour time difference between Vietnam and China results in new moon occurring on different days. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Vietnamese calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday food and cleaning the house. These foods include bánh chưng, bánh dày, dried young bamboo soup (canh măng), giò, and sticky rice. Many customs are practiced during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestor worship, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.

Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. They start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring, and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).

Tết Nguyên Đán, more commonly known by its shortened name Tết, is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring based on the Lunar calendar. The name Tết Nguyên Đán is Sino-Vietnamese for Feast of the First Morning.

It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. During Tết, Vietnamese visit their relatives and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. Due to the high regard in which people hold it, Tết, as often as not, is consumed with unique, distinctive colors and flavors.

Tet is the biggest festival in Vietnam, but it's also famous in foreign too.Tet often celebrate at end of January. You should make your house look beautiful at Tet so you should clean and decorate it. You should also buy flowers and plants. But you shouldn’t buy fireworks. There many belifes like :give/get money in red envelopes.

-In Thailand:Throw water at people for lucky,..

-In Vietnam:Don't eat shrimps ,don't present a black cat ,don't sweep the house ,....

So Tet is the traditional festival for Vietnamese and foreigners.I like Tet very much.
