Dùng để so sánh 2 người hoặc 2 vật, 2 nhóm người hoặc 2 nhóm vật.
1. Công thức:S + Verb + short adj/ adv + er + than + Noun/ pronoun
more + Noun/ long adj/ adv
less + Noun (không đếm được)/ adj/ adv
fewer + Noun (đếm được)
Công thức này với verb là động từ, short adj là tính từ ngắn, long adj là tính từ dài, adv là trạng từ, more mang nghĩa nhiều hơn, còn less và fewer mang nghĩa ít hơn. Nếu sử dụng là tính từ ngắn thì tính từ +er, tính từ dài thì thêm more ở phía trước tính từ.Ví dụ:
– Today is hotter than yesterday. (Hôm nay thì nóng hơn hôm qua)
– He speaks Spanish more fluently than I do. (Anh ta nói tiếng Tây Ban Nha trôi chảy hơn tôi)
– She has more books than me. (Cô ấy có nhiều sách hơn tôi)
– Their jobs allow them less freedom than ours do. (Công việc của họ cho phép họ có ít thời gian rãnh hơn công việc của chúng ta)
– He goes to school less frequently than she does. (Anh ấy đi học ít thường xuyên hơn cô ấy)
– February has fewer days than March. (Tháng 2 thì có ít ngày hơn tháng 3)
Lưu ý: So sánh hơn, kém được nhấn mạnh bằng cách thêm much hoặc far trước hình thức so sánh
Ví dụ: My house is far more expensive than hers. (Nhà của tôi thì đắt hơn nhiều so với nhà cô ấy)
2. Chú ý Short adj (Tính từ ngắn):– Là tính từ có 1 âm tiết: long, short, tall,…
=> Nếu từ đó kết thúc bằng nguyên âm + phụ âm thì gấp đôi phụ âm
Ví dụ: big => bigger; hot => hotter
– Là tính từ có 2 âm tiết kết thúc bằng: y, et, ow, er, le, ure như: narrow, simple, quiet, polite,.. (ngoại lệ là guilty, eager dùng với most vì là tính từ dài).
=> Nếu từ đó kết thúc bằng phụ âm y –> ta đổi y thành i.
Ví dụ: happy => happier; dry => drier
Là tính từ có nhiều hơn một âm tiết (trừ trường hợp 2 âm tiết của short adj) như: precious (quý báu), difficult (khó khăn), beautiful (xinh đẹp), important (quan trọng),…

Australia is far/further hotter than Ireland. It is strange but often a coke is more expensive/ expensiver than a beer. Non-smokers usually live more long/longer than smokers.
