In terms of similarities, both American and Vietnamese teenagers may seek to become more independent during their teenage years. They may also work part-time jobs or engage in community service activities.
In terms of differences, the cultural and educational contexts in which American and Vietnamese teenagers grow up can play a significant role in shaping their experiences and expectations for independence. For example, the emphasis on individualism in American culture may be different from the emphasis on collectivism in Vietnamese culture. Additionally, the education systems in the two countries may have different approaches to promoting independence and self-direction.

SPEAKING Describe and compare the photos. What are the similarities and differences between the activities? Use the words below to help you.
become dehydrated | climber | desert | food and water |
frostbite | high altitude | oxygen | tent |
Looking at the pictures I can see they are running in the desert and the second picture shows the man who is staying in a tent on a cold mountain covered with a lot of snow. The people in the first picture, I guess they are taking part in a running activity because they have numbers on their T-shirts. They look really tired because of the hot weather and I guess they are becoming dehydrated. By contrast, in the second picture, the weather is frostbite because the main color of the picture is the color of snow. The man is sitting on the top of the mountain with a high altitude. He is also wearing a face mask to supply oxygen. I guess he is a climber, and he wants to conquer this mountain.

1 what characteristics do you like best? Why? 2 what are the differences between American characteristics and Vietnamese ones? 3 which characteristics would you like to introduce to foreigners?

I would use the above to ask for someone's advice on which they preferred of three or more choices, where the 'ranking' might go from least preferred to best. (this one, not at all, these two are ok, this one is very nice, but this one I like best.) In other words, good < better < best.
Most seems to me to connote a larger sample from which to choose. It is also asking more (to my way of thinking) for shades of interpretations instead of an authoritative opinion. Best limits the choices and the answer seems final.

There are differences and similarities between Vietnamese and American cultures.
In America, two generations live in a home. In Vietnam, two, three or even four generations live under one roof. In America, old-aged parents live in nursing homes but in Vietnam they live with their children.
It is not polite to ask American about age, marriage and income. However, it is normal in Vietnam. Americans can greet anyone in the family first but in Vietnam, that's wrong. As a rule, all members have to greet the oldest one first.
Americans buy groceries once a week and keep them in a refrigerator. In Vietnam, inspite of having refrigerator, they still buy groceries every day. Maybe, they want fresh food, they consider that it is better for their health.
For American, Christmas and New Year holidays are the most important. But for Vietnamese, only New Year. One another feature, American children sleep in their own bedrooms, Vietnamese ones sleep with their parents so that they are cared well.

From my experience, I would say it depends a lot on your friends' taste. I realized that only Asian can stand the smell of fish sauce (and shrimp paste, especially). Whenever I cook Vietnamese dishes at home and have some leftover for lunch the next day, it's very likely that I'll have the whole kitchen area for myself (which I feel very sorry for :( ). My friends seems to enjoy Vietnamese food a lot, and because they said they want to taste authentic food, they had to endure the smell in the sauce we always use :P
Overall, they basically will go for anything when they're sure about wanting to try. So it's best to ask your friends first, to see what kind of food they can't eat, then explain to them a bit about what you're planning to cook. If it sounds good to them, go for it.
And my recommendation would be Hủ tiếu, cơm hến, cơm tấm or bún riêu, because you can find Phở or chả giò everywhere (even in places that doesn't even sell Vietnamese food

Anyone who has seen the exquisite costumes worn by Vietnamese women will recognize similarities in the traditional dress of the male. There are many variations on the basic theme. At the top of the list is the elaborate dress of the emperor and the mandarins. Their rank was shown in the display of color in the brocade and embroideries. Gold brocade with embroidered dragons was for the emperor only. Gold is the national color and the dragon heads the fabulous mythical animal world. Purple is the color reserved for high-ranking court mandarins, while blue is for those of lower rank. Costumes worn for religious ceremonies also have their special colors. Dresses for ceremonial occasions usually have very wide and ample sleeves. Wedding dresses are similar to the popular fashions, and the color is usually purple or blue brocade. Dresses for mourning have frayed fringes or a line up the back and may be either black or white in color.
1. The Vietnamese traditional dress of men and women are somehow similar.
2. The dress of mandarins is at the top of the list.
3. The rank of person could be revealed via the color of the dress
4. Gold brocade and embroidered dragons was for the emperor and mandarins.
5. The normal dress and the ceremonial dress have no difference.
Work in groups. Discuss the similarities and differences between education after leaving school in Viet Nam and in the UK.
Similarities:
- Both countries offer vocational education as an alternative to traditional academic education after secondary school.
- In both countries, students can continue their education after secondary school to obtain a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or a doctorate.
- In both countries, grades are important for further education, with students needing to achieve good grades to progress to higher levels of education.
Differences:
- In Vietnam, there is a strong emphasis on academic education, with vocational education being seen as a secondary option. In contrast, vocational education is given more importance in the UK and is often referred to as career education or technical education.
- In the UK, students have the option of attending sixth-form colleges or staying at their secondary schools for two more years to study subjects they are interested in or subjects related to higher education. Such an option is not available in Vietnam.
- The education system in Vietnam is heavily influenced by the government and is more centralized, while the UK education system is more decentralized and allows for greater autonomy in decision-making by schools and teachers.
- The length of time spent in university in Vietnam is longer compared to the UK. In Vietnam, a bachelor's degree can take up to five years to complete, while in the UK, it takes three years.
These are just a few examples of the similarities and differences between the education systems in Vietnam and the UK. Students in the group discussion can explore these points in more detail and also add their own observations and experiences to the discussion.
