- Về tổng sản phẩm quốc dân: năm 1968 đạt 183 tỉ USD, vươn lên đứng thứ hai trên thế giới (sau Mĩ). Năm 1990, thu nhập bình quân theo đầu người đạt 23796 USD, đứng thứ hai trên thế giới (sau Thụy Sĩ).

- Về công nghiệp:

+ Trong những năm 1950 - 1960, tốc độ tăng trưởng bình quân hàng năm là 15%;

+ Những năm 1961 - 1970 là 13,5%.

- Về nông nghiệp: cung cấp được hơn 80% nhu cầu lương thực trong nước, 2/3 nhu cầu thịt, sữa và nghề đánh cá rất phát triển, đứng thứ hai trên thế giới (sau Pê-ru).

=> Từ những năm 70 của thế kỉ XX, cùng với Mĩ và Tây Âu, Nhật Bản trở thành một trong ba trung tâm kinh tế - tài chính của thế giới.
