London, the capital of Great Britain, is situated on the Thames River. It is the largest city in Europe with a population of over 8 million. It is divided into four parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End.
The city is small in area but it is the commercial heart of London. Many banks and offices are situated there. The Tower and St. Paul's Cathedral is very large and fine. It was built in 1710. The famous English architect Christopher Wren planned and built St. Paul's Cathedral. If the city may be called the commercial heart of London, Westminster is the center of the administration. We can see the Houses of Parliament there. It is a beautiful building with two towers and a very big clock called Big Ben. Westminster Abbey is opposite the Houses of Parliament.
The West End with the best and most expensive clubs, restaurants and theatres, beautiful houses and parks is the place where rich people live. Working people live in the East End where there are no parks or gardens and no fine houses.

Making a film takes a long time and is very hard work. Writing the story for the film may take many weeks. Filming the story being acted - or shooting the film, as it is called - often takes at least six months. Actors and cameramen work from very early in the morning until late at night. Each scene has to be acted and reacted, filmed and refilmed, until it is just right. Sometimes the same scene may have to be acted twenty or thirty times. The film studio is like a large factory, and the indoor stages are very big indeed. Scenery of all kinds is made in the studio. Churches, houses, castles and forests are all built of wood and cardboard. Several hundred people work together to make one film. Some of these people are the actors and actresses. The director of the film, however, is the most important person in a film studio. He decided how the scenesshould be filmed and how the actors should act. Most people go to see a film because they know the film stars in it. Sometimes the film may be very poor. It is best to choose a film made by a good director. A newspaper makes it money from the price people pay for it and also from
the advertisings it carries. A popular newspaper with a circulation of over five
millions daily does a lot of money. Less seriously newspapers are probably read just
for entertainment. They have big headings above the new stories, funny cartoons to
look at and sensational photos of violent. The gossip columns are full of stories of
private live of famous people. No one takes the political views of such papers
seriously. On an other hand, in a free country where there is no censorship, serious
newspapers are read principle for their news, sent to themselves by their
correspondents around the world and by the big news agencies. People also read
these newspapers for their revisions of new books, films and plays and for the
editorials what represent the opinion of the newspaper itself about the important
events and issues of the moment.

Jack: I love going to the cinema because there are many films to choose at our local cinema, and it’s very modern. The ice cream is fantastic and there’re great snacks and popcorn. I go with my friends every Friday. We all like science fiction films because the special effects are incredible. We love films like Avatar and Transformers.
Katie: I don’t like horror films or science fiction films but I love romantic comedies. One of my favorite films is The Proposal. It’s about a woman who decides to marry her assistant, but they’re not really in love. His family, in Alaska, try to organize a traditional wedding ... it’s very funny. In the end, they fall in love, of course. I don’t go to the cinema much, because there isn’t a cinema near my house. I can watch films on DVD and I find it interesting.
