London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and is the largest metropolitan area of the Union. Britain is also the second largest urban area in the European Union . London was founded by the Roman Empire with a history of more than 2,000 years and its early name was Londinium. London's ancient center of action is the City of London, which has kept its miles of medieval-scale boundaries. As early as the 19th century, the name "London" was known as a major metropolis developed around the main center. The merging of metropolitan areas constituted the London area and the Greater London administrative region, run by the mayor of London and the Council of London. London is a global city, with New York City as the largest financial center in the world. and has the largest GDP in Europe. London's influence on politics, finance, education, entertainment, media, fashion, arts and culture has given London a global city status. This is a major tourist destination for domestic and international travelers. London hosted the 1908 Summer Olympics and the 1948 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. London has four world heritages: the Tower of London; Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; The area includes Westminster Palace, Westminster Abbey and St.Mary's Cathedral. Margaret; Historic Greenwich settlements and a diverse ethnic, cultural and religious background, with more than 300 languages spoken. As of July 2007, the city had an official population of 7,556,900 in Great Britain, making it the most populous city in the European Union. Greater London Urban Area (Greater London's second largest metropolitan area) has a population of 8,278,251. London's largest metropolitan area, with a population of 12 million to 16 million. Statistics show that less than 70% of London's population is white, suggesting that London is highly international. The London Underground system, managed by the Transport for London, is the world's oldest metro system. London Heathrow Airport is the busiest airport in the world according to international visitors with airspace busier than any other urban center in the world.
