Simple Ways to Lose Weight on a Budget
Plan to Cook at Home Instead of buying costly prepared meals, which often tend to be high in calories, cook your own at home. Plan out your meals with high-fiber foods like beans and whole grains which will keep you full and are a cheaper, healthier alternative to rich proteins and more processed grains. Eat Less Eating less leads to weight loss, and cost savings, especially if you cut down on the right things. Start by cutting your portions of pricy meat and poultry. Double Up on Vegetables Vegetables are great for weight loss, as well as all-around health. They are low in calories and high in water and fiber - two things that keep you feeling full. Save cash by shopping for those that are in season. Frozen vegetables can be a great bargain, with just as much nutrition as fresh, since they are picked and frozen at their peak ripeness. Get Creative with Your Exercise Options You don’t need to shell out a monthly gym fee to get moving. Instead, find fun activities you enjoy for free. If you’re just getting started with a regular exercise routine, try your beginning with daily walks: start slowly and build up time and speed. Make Friends with Someone One of the most powerful resources you have for helping you lose weight is your social network. Find a friend who is also trying to lose weight and agree to help each other stay motivated. One study found that when friends participated in a group weight-loss programme together, they lost more weight than people who did the same programme on their own.

As a result of years of research, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example, Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit and vegetables. Because of their diet, they have high rates of cancer and heart disease; In Japan, in contrast, people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have very low rates of cancer and heart disease. In fact, the Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. Unfortunately, when Japanese people move to the United States, the rates of heart disease and cancer increase as their diet changes. Moreover, as hamburgers, ice-cream, and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rates of heart disease and cancer are increasing there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy products in other countries such as Cuba, Mauritius and Hungary. Not surprisingly, the disease rates in these countries are increasing along with the change in diet. Consequently, doctors’ everywhere advise people to eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and to eat less meat and fewer dairy products.

FRUIT, VEGETABLES AND YOU!
Why is it important to eat fruit and vegetables?
Rich in vitamins and nutrients, fruit and vegetables make up the basis of a healthy diet. In fact, they are our fountain of youth, so it’s hard to understand how so many of us can resist these natural miracle foods. But sadly, we do. The hard facts tell us that 70% of the US population – that’s seven out of every ten Americans – fail to meet the minimum recommendation of five servings a day. This leaves us overfed and undernourished, causing a variety of health problems. Adding more fruit and veggies to your meals will dramatically help your body fight disease, boost your energy and trim your waistline.
How do I add more fruit and vegetables to my diet?
There are several easy ways to put more natural goodness into all your meals. If you’re willing to try something new, you can have a lot of fun doing it too. All it takes is a little planning:
· Drink your fruit by making smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. The combinations of ingredients you can use are endless, and in many cases, these drinks are so filling that they make a good substitute for an entire meal. Try using a high-powered blender to make thick tropical cocktails like pineapple-orange- banana. For something simpler, a hand-operated citrus juicer is all you need to make delicious, cheap and naturally sweet orange juice.
· Eat more veggies by starting one meal a day with a small salad. And instead of the usual iceberg lettuce, try making a spinach salad. After all, the darker the greens, the more nutrient-rich they are.
· Add peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms or onions to your scrambled eggs or anywhere else you can think of, such as in pasta sauces, soups and sandwiches.
· For dessert, how about frozen bananas and grapes? If you have an extra sweet tooth, you can dip the bananas into melted dark chocolate before you freeze them. Otherwise, strawberries dipped in dark chocolate are also a delicious, guilt-free treat.
· Never leave the house without a healthy snack such as a small bag of dried apricots, apples or cranberries. To avoid keeping the rest of the family waiting, always keep your fresh fruits and vegetables sliced, well-packed and ready to go.
But just remember, to maximize their nutritional value, it is recommended that fruit and veggies are soaked for 20 minutes in a mixture of water and white vinegar. This will not only keep them fresh, but will also remove all dirt, insects and bacteria.
