Dear guests, I’d like to talk to you today about renewable and non-renewable energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources. They include oil, coal, and natural gas. They can be used to create energy, generate electricity, or drive big machinery. Unfortunately, they are harmful to the environment. Viet Nam still relies mostly on non-renewable energy sources, however, hydro power is increasingly used here too.
Hydro and nuclear power can generate a great deal of energy. They are renewable and plentiful. However, hydro power is limited because dams cannot be built in certain areas. Nuclear power can provide enough electricity for the world’s needs, but it is dangerous. The sun and the wind are other alternative sources of energy. The wind turns turbines to
make electricity. Solar power can be converted into electricity. It can be used to heat or cool our houses. Although there are some disadvantages, these alternative energy sources can offer abundant amounts of clean, safe electricity. They will be valued more and more in the future in Viet Nam.
1.How many types of energy sources are mentioned in the text? What are they?
2.What are the disadvantages of hydro and nuclear power?
3.Why do you think the wind and the sun are called alternative sources of energy?
4.What types of energy does Viet Nam use most?
5.What does the professor think Viet Nam will use more in the future?

Hello students. Today I'd like to tell you some information about types and sources of energy. Energy is classified into two main groups: renewable and non-renewable.The energy generated from natural sources such as the sun, wind, rain, and tides is called renewable energy. They are plentiful and can be generated again and again. They also have low carbon emissions, so they are considered green and environment-friendly. Moreover, using renewable energy can reduce your electricity bills. Unfortunately, solar energy can be only used during the daytime but not during night or the rainy season. Geothermal energy also can bring toxic chemicals beneath the earth's surface to the top and can create environmental changes.
Non-renewable energy is the energy taken from other sources that are available on the earth. They are limited and will run out in the future. They can't be re-generated in a short time. Fossil fuels - natural gas, oil and coal - are examples. They are cheap and easy to use. However, when burnt, they release toxic gases in the air, so they cause serious environmental changes such as global warming. And the important thing is that non-renewable sources will expire someday.

Our non-renewable energy sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas will (1) __________ out in the future. That's the (2) __________ why we are looking for alternative sources of (3) __________ which are cheap, clean and effective. These (4) __________ of energy will not cause (5) __________ or waste natural resources. (6) __________ power is one of them. It's currently the cheapest source of large-scale renewable energy.
Most wind energy is produced from turbines that have three 60-meter-long blades. The wind spins the blades, which turn a shaft connected to a generator that produces (7) __________. Now, mass production and technology advances are (8) __________ turbines cheaper. In 2000, cumulative wind capacity (9) __________the world was 17,000 megawatts. Fifteen years later, this number increased sharply to 430,000 megawatts. It is predicted that with this pace of growth, (10) in 2050 one third of the world's electricity needs will be fulfilled by wind power.
