Này là dùng thì HTHT, cách đây 5 năm ông ta đã mua nó thì có nghĩa là ông ta đã có được chiếc xe từ 5 năm trước là cái việc mua nó đã hoàn thành rồi mà chỉ có việc có là còn kéo dài đến bây giờ vì ông chưa bán nó nên phải dùng "has had".
Bởi vì thì HTHT diễn tả hành động xảy ra một hành động xảy ra xuyên suốt, nếu ta ghi là buy thì câu sẽ có nghĩa là ông Brown đã mua chiếc xe trong vòng năm năm, không thể cs chuyện trong vòng 5 năm ông liên tục mua xe đc, thay vì thế ta sẽ dùng từ have, nghĩa là có, câu sẽ hợp về ngữ nghĩa mà vx đúng về ngữ pháp
