Work in groups. Carry out a survey to find out how people in your area are reducing the negative impact of their daily activities on the environment and trying to limit global warming.
Report your survey results to the class.
The report should include the following points:
• what their daily activities used to involve, e.g. driving to work
• how these activities affect global warming, e.g. releasing carbon dioxide emissions
• what people do to reduce their environmental impact, e.g. cycling to work
• what results people get, e.g. reducing carbon footprint
Human is the direct factor that causes global warming and makes this phenomenon more and more serious. The reason is because the increase in CO2 content is mainly due to human activities, such as fuel burning, the reduction in agricultural land use, especially after the industrial revolution.
Helping limited global warming, we should:
1. Drive less
Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You'll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don't drive!
2. Avoid products with a lot of packaging
You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you reduce your garbage by 10 percent.
3. Plant more trees
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.
4. Turn off electronic devices
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer, when you're not using them, will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Work in groups. Add more steps or tips, and report to the whole class. Vote for the best recipe for cooking rice in a rice cooker.
Some additional tips for cooking rice in a rice cooker that can be discussed in your group:
1. Use a rice washing bowl to rinse the rice thoroughly before cooking. This will remove excess starch and impurities from the rice.
2. Soak the rice in water for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This will help the rice to cook evenly and absorb moisture better.
3. For brown rice, use 2 1/2 cups of water per cup of rice, and cook for a longer time than white rice.
4. Once the rice is cooked, let it sit in the rice cooker for 10-15 minutes before serving. This will allow the rice to absorb any remaining moisture and become fluffier.
5. Use a non-stick rice cooker bowl or add a tablespoon of oil to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the bowl.
SPEAKING Work in groups. Discuss the question and then share with the class.
Which do you think is more effective in raising people's awareness of protecting the environment: a film or a book? Justify your answer.
In my opinion, to raise people's awareness of protecting the environment, a film is more effective than a book. This is because of two reasons.
Firstly, watching a film is less time consuming than reading a book. We can spend three hours watching a film on the laptop or at the movie theater; however, it is quite hard for most people to spend the same amount of time reading books.
Secondly, the film is more interesting and appealing to people with the moving pictures and modern sound system. It’s easier to make viewers understand.
Tạm dịch:
Theo tôi, để nâng cao nhận thức của mọi người về bảo vệ môi trường, một bộ phim sẽ hiệu quả hơn một cuốn sách. Điều này là do hai lý do.
Work in pairs. Read the following ideas and decide if they are pros or cons of self-study. Think of other pros and cons to add.
| Pros | Cons |
1. Self-study gives learners more freedom (e.g. they decide what to study and how). |
|
|
2. Learners need more time to learn things (e.g. they work on their own, with no one to push them or help them). |
|
|
3. Learners become responsible (e.g. they set their learning goals and make plans to achieve them). |
|
|
4. Learners may not develop certain life skills (e.g. good communication and relationship skills) |
|
|
5. Self-study makes learners confident ( e.g. they realise they can complete tasks by themselves) |
|
|
6. Learners may not learn practical skills (e.g. they may focus too much on learning, and may not apply the academic skills to real life) |
|

SPEAKING Work in groups. Discuss the question below. Use evidence from the photo B.
Do you think it is possible to learn without a teacher?
Bài tham khảo
Yes, it is possible to learn without a teacher to some extent, as demonstrated in Photo B where the students appear to be engaged in a discussion about a tool related to renewable energy. However, a teacher's guidance and expertise can greatly enhance the learning process by providing valuable insights and information, as well as structure and support for students. Therefore, while self-directed learning can be effective for some individuals, having a teacher to facilitate the learning process can greatly enhance the educational experience.
