A carbon footprint is historically defined as the total emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent.[1]Greenhouse gases (GHGs), including carbon dioxide, can be emitted through land clearance and the production and consumption of food, fuels, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, transportation and other services.[2]

In most cases, the total carbon footprint cannot be exactly calculated because of inadequate knowledge of and data about the complex interactions between contributing processes, including the influence of natural processes that store or release carbon dioxide. For this reason, Wright, Kemp, and Williams, have suggested to define the carbon footprint as:

A measure of the total amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) emissions of a defined population, system or activity, considering all relevant sources, sinks and storage within the spatial and temporal boundary of the population, system or activity of interest. Calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent using the relevant 100-year global warming potential (GWP100).[3]

Most of the carbon footprint emissions for the average U.S. household come from "indirect" sources, e.g. fuel burned to produce goods far away from the final consumer. These are distinguished from emissions which come from burning fuel directly in one's car or stove, commonly referred to as "direct" sources of the consumer's carbon footprint.[4]

The concept name of the carbon footprint originates from ecological footprint, discussion,[5] which was developed by William E. Rees and Mathis Wackernagel in the 1990s. This accounting approach compares how much people demand compared to what the planet can renew. This allows to assess the number of "earths" that would be required if everyone on the planet consumed resources at the same level as the person calculating their ecological footprint. The carbon Footprint is one part of the ecological footprint. The carbon part was popularized by a large campaign of BP in 2005.[6] In 2007, carbon footprint was used as a measure of carbon emissions to develop the energy plan for City of Lynnwood, Washington. Carbon footprints are more focused than ecological footprints since they measure merely emissions of gases that cause climate change into the atmosphere.

We have to do something about pollution. Even though there are warnings about global warming, companies don’t do anything to reduce pollution.

Our sky, air, rivers, beaches and countryside are becoming rubbish dumps. The air is so polluted it is giving children breathing problems.

Polluted rivers have no fish left in them and beaches are too dangerous to walk on because of the garbage everywhere. It seems a lot of people don’t care.

I think there should be big fines for polluters. I don’t mind paying more for things if they can be made with less pollution.

The problem is that companies are more interested in profits than pollution. We have only just started looking at our carbon footprint.

My carbon footprint is small. i am considerate because i always protect the enviroment: i take shower instead of baths, walk or ride a bike when travelling short ditances and go to school by bik.i could try harder to use a hand fan to keep cool in summer. By saving sources of energy, i can help the enviroment to be better.

*) Talk about your favouritr festival:

Although there are many festivals throughout a year, I like Mid- fall festival best because of the following reasons. Firstly, it happens in August. We can enjoy special cake named Banh Trung Thu with some delicious fruit and sweet. Secondly, we can wear marks and crowd to join the colorful parade on the streets. Thirdly, we can sing some songs about this festival such as "Ruoc den ong sao", "Dem sao".... Finally, we can play some games with our friends. Therefore, Mid- fall festival is my favourite festival.

My favorite movie is "A Walk To Remember". This is my favorite movie because it deals with real life issues, like some of the most important things in life such as: love, relationships, and most important, who your real friends are. "A Walk To Remember is about a girl named Jamie (Mandy Moore) who is the daughter of a minister who becomes ill. During high school Jamie doesn't have very many friends but is in alot of activities and through that she meets a reckless boy named Landon. Landon got into some trouble which made the principal force him into being in a play for the drama club. Landon Played a lead role as did Jamie, even though they didn't hang out in the same crowd of friends when Landon needed Giúp with his lines in the play he turned to Jamie to Giúp him out. One of the first things she told Landon was for him to promise that he wouldn't fall in love with her. But that is a promise that he did not keep. Jamie finally told Landon that she had cancer and the treatment stoped working so she didn't have very much time to live. Jamie had this list of accomplisments that she wanted to make before she passed. The number one thing was to get married at the same church that her mother and father was married in. Landon made ALL of her dreams come true. But unfortunitally her cancer became worse and she died. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes heart touching stories, I liked it and would watch it a million times a day if I could.

XV. Read the passage and answer the question.

A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the air by your own energy needs. You need transportation, electricity, food, clothing, and other goods. CO2 is produced by the burning of fossil fuels which is used to provide energy for your homes, by the cars you travel in and by the manufacture and transport of goods you buy.

Carbon dioxide is also called greenhouse gas, which causes global warming. That is the reason why the carbon footprint is a very poweful tool to understand the impact of personal behaviours on global warming. If you want to contribute to stop global warming, the reduction of your personal carbon footprint is essential. Fist, you can reduce your carbon footprint by driving less. When possible, walk or ride a bike to avoid carbon emissions completely or use public transport in order to decrease CO emissions. Second, support using clean energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal energy and biogas. Finally, reusing or recycling items you no longer use is also a good way to reduce your carbon footprint.

1. What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into the air by your own energy needs.

2. How is CO2 produced?

CO2 is produced by the burning of fossil fuels which is used to provide energy for your homes, by the cars you travel in and by the manufacture and transport of goods you buy.

3. What can carbon footprint cause?

It can cause global warming.

4. What should you do to stop global warming?

Driving less, supporting using clean energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal energy and biogas.
