Did you know that you do not have to be a chemist to invent something? An example of chemistry invention that was made by a non-scientist is Liquid Paper. In 1952, a divorced woman named Bette Nesmith Graham needed to work to support herself and her son. Life was very difficult for a single mother. [1] She soon found a job as a typist, but she was not very good at it. [2] She made a lot of errors typing leading her to formulate a white tempura paint to hide them. [3] Using her kitchen as a laboratory, she developed a liquid that other people wanted to buy and use. She named this liquid “Mistake Out” [4]
While continuing to work as a secretary, she educated herself in business methods, promotion, and research until she was satisfied that the product she had developed was really worthwhile. Sometimes around 1952 she offered “Mistake Out” to IBM, which turned it down. From 1952 until 1979 she continued to make and sell “Mistake Out”, now renamed “Liquid Paper”, out of her home. In 1979, the Gillette Corporation bought “Liquid Paper” for $47.5 million dollars plus royalties.

A bone discovered in chance in the 17th century was the beginning of the search for dinosaurs. From then in, scientists and the public have been fascinated by these creatures. In accordance to beliefs at the time, the initial discovery was thought to be the bone of a human giant. However, in 1824, a scientist, William Buckland ,calculated that the bone belonged to a 12-metre, flesh-eating reptile and named it Megalosaurus, on the process giving us the first of the wonderful list of exotic names for dinosaurs. The 17th century discovery had, on turn, led to a series of futher names for further finds around that time. All these at a greater or lesser extent confirmed Buckland's theories. For far the biggest dinosaur discovered to date was probaly over 40 metres long. To the most part, dinosaurs ranged from the size of a chicken to that of a giraffe. At most respects, what we know about their habits is still very limited. What we do know is at least on some extent based on pure speculation

I've just been to see a film called Touching the Void. It's about two climbers who decided to go climbing in the mountains in Peru. It took them two days to reach the mountain they had been decided to climb because it was in such a remote place. They left a companion and the most of their supplies at a base camp, optimisstically thinking about they would be back in a couple of days. After a difficult climb, they reached at the top of the mountain. It was then that everything started to go wrong. Because of one climber had broken his leg, he had to be lowered down the mountain by means of a rope. His leg it was so much painful that he couldn't stand on it. After a very exciting bit of the film, which I won't describe, he found by himself alone at the bottom of a crevasse. He managed to climb out and eventually crawl to safety. The cold was so intense that he got frostbite in his hands, but he was carried on, dragging himself down a glacer and accross rocks. When he arrived at the base camp, his friends were too amazed to see him. They couldn't believe that in despite his broken leg, he had managed to reach the camp.

The British ship H.M.S Breadalbane sank in the Canadian Arctic on August 21 1853, after being crushed by encroaching ice while on a rescue mission. The 31 crewmen aboard escaped over the ice to a companion vessel as the Breadalbane went down in 15 minutes.
Canadian scientists now report that after a three-year search of records about the ship, they have located it sitting upright in 110 meters of water. Using a robot camera device, they said they have taken remarkably clear pictures of the Breadalbane, which has been well preserved by the ice and the supercold water "What we have is a treasure trove of 19th century Arctic exploration." reported one scientist. Located 1000 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, the Breadalbane is the world's northernmost known shipwreck.
According to the passage, the Breadalbane was sailing where it was on August 21, 1853, mainly to
A. explore the area in which it sank. B. defend that area for the British government.

What happened to the Breadalbane's crew?

A. have taken underwater photos of the ship.
B. dived down to the wreck to explore it
C. managed to refloat the boat using modern engineering techniques.
D. retrieved some objects from the wreck with the ship's name on them.
The reason that the scientists called the wreck a "treasure trove" is that they expect it to yield a lot of
A. precious metals. B. valuable foreign goods. C. precious stones. D. valuable information.
The main reason that they can be sure to expect to learn a great deal about 19th century Arctic exploration from the wreck is that
A. no other ship ever sank in waters so far north.
B. water currents are gentle there so the ship was not moved.
C. the camera they are using is a robot.
D. the ship has been extremely well preserved by the severe cold.
