GROWING PAIN
At the age of thirteen. Zara Long became the youngest athlete to represent her country at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. By twenty-one, she (1)_ had enough. "I'd (2)_ stick pins in my eyes than go swimming now. I want to do normal things in my life. I want to commute." (3)_ twenty-six, Zara works as a sports administrator. It has been a struggle to find a job she enjoys. "When you have got accustomed to that level of achievement, when you have got so far (4)_ early, it's hard not to feel unproductive." Long accepts that she was ill-equipped to deal (5)_ the social and educational consequences of her time-consuming and lonely training regime. "It just gradually creeps up on you at (6)_ age.", she explains, "and it seems like the (7)_ normal thing in the world. The other kids thought I was mad." In (8)_ early twenties, Long admits that she experienced some resentment (9) _ her parents. "I missed out on so (10)_ . Education was always second best. No-one ever suggested I wouldn't be a swimmer for the rest of my life." She believes that because of the intensity of her coaching she has been left (11)_ for personal discipline. "I find (12)_ hard to do things for (13)_ because I'm so (14)_ to people dangling a carrot in front of me. Regret is the wrong word, but I do wonder (15)_ would have happened if things had been different."
