LANGUAGE FOCUS - ­Past continuous: affirmative and negative

1. The little girl was||wasn't||were||weren't smiling nicely. (Cô gái nhỏ đang cười rất xinh.)

2. She wasn't||was||were||weren't playing with the toy. (Cô ấy không chơi đồ chơi.)

3. She was||wasn't||were||weren't making toys with ice-cream sticks. (Cô ấy đang làm đồ chơi bằng những que kem.)

4. Some people weren't||wasn't||was||were singing. (Một số người đã không hát.)

5. They were||weren't||wasn't||was making decorations from tyres and bottles. (Họ đang làm đồ trang trí từ lốp xe và chai lọ.)

RULES

1. We use the past continuous to talk about an action in progress||a finished action in the past.

2. We form the past continuous with was (were)||did and the -ing||base form of a verb.

3. We form the negative of the past continuous with wasn't (weren't)||didn't and the -ing||base form of a verb.

Photographer David Slater ¹ (visit) Sulawesi, an island in Indonesia. He ² (photograph) the monkeys there and they ³ (jump) all over his camera and camera bag. One of the bravest monkeys ⁴ (play) with the camera, and it took a photo. The monkey took over 100 photos that day, but the one that became a classic was this photo: the monkey ⁵ (smile) when he took the selfie.
