ENGLISH PROFICIENCY INDEX

People often talk about English as a lingua franca. More than 350 million people around the world speak English as their rst language and over 900 million speak it as a second language. Education First (EF) is an international education company in the USA. It produced English Prociency Index (EPI) in 2011. It ranks how well non-native English speakers can speak the language in their countries. In the most recent edition of the EF index for the Asian region, Singapore ranks 1st – its EPI score is 611. Second is the Philippines with an EPI score of 562. Việt Nam ranks 13th with an EPI score of 473.  In Việt Nam, the development of most aspects requires better English. More people are interested in learning English. Hopefully, the EPI in Việt Nam will be higher in the years to come.

Nó đưa ra Chỉ số Năng lực Tiếng Anh (EPI) vào năm 2011. Nó xếp hạng mức độ những người không phải là bản xứ nói tiếng Anh tốt như thế nào ở quốc gia của họ. Trong ấn bản gần đây nhất của chỉ số EF cho khu vực châu Á, Singapore đứng thứ nhất - điểm EPI là 611. Đứng thứ hai là Philippines với điểm EPI là 562. Hy vọng rằng EPI ở Việt Nam sẽ cao hơn trong những năm tới.

Student B: I don’t speak English well enough, but I practice it everyday; therefore, I think my English

speaking skills will be improved in the future.

Student B: I intend to study in the Netherlands.

Student B: Of course yes.You know,in the most recent edition of the global EF index, The Netherlands ranks

1st – its EPI score is 663.

I use English for different purposes in my daily life.First of all, English helps me to communicate with people

all over the world.I make some foreign friends on Facebook, so I often chat to them about our school life and

other topics. Besides, English helps me to get information and improve my knowledge. Because almost any

information is available in English, it is easy for me to get access to all source of information with my

English. Finally, English is useful when I want to go abroad to study. A lot of schools and universities in

different countries provide scholarships and courses in English. I am learning English hard to get an IELTS

score of 6. 5 so that next year I can go to the Netherlands to study. In conclusion, English is useful for me in

various ways.
