Have you asked yourself why scientific advances are so important to our lives today? Just look around and you’ll know why. Literally, at every instant of time, you are surrounded by tech gadgets and scientific advances. Whether you are working or resting, you are always using them. They have made our lives easy. However, they also bring some disadvantages to our lives and potential problems for the future. Let’s take robots as the first example. The main function of robots is to replace the work that people used to do, or perform tasks that man cannot. Therefore, robots help people work in harsh environments like outer space, underwater, or even in fire. They can be used instead of people when human safety is a concern. They can come in any size and they do not require sleep or breaks. As a result, they will improve productivity and reduce cost. But at the same time, they may bring a lot of unemployment. In fact, they have already taken the place of many humans in factories and restaurants. In addition, using robots in the workplace could make people lazy and lessen interaction among people. Another example of important scientific advances I want to mention is smart phones. Generally, the mobile phone brings about a lot of advantages. First of all, the mobile phone is considered the quickest means of communication in our daily life; we can easily contact our friends and relatives from anywhere by calling or sending messages. Second, the mobile phone is also a means of entertainment for people. You can read the news, play games, listen to music, or watch a movie. Finally, if we have a smartphone in hand, our studying becomes more effective. For example, it’s easy to access the dictionary or to find useful sources of reference on the internet. On the other hand, smartphone users can become addicted to their mobile phones which could limit in-person human communication. Also, using mobile phones too much can not only negatively influence study results but also cause eyes diseases. In conclusion, scientific advances are useful and essential in our modern lives today. They bring many benefits to us but also contain some drawbacks. There is nothing black-and-white about scientific advances in our changing world. They will best serve us if we use them for their true purpose and at the appropriate time.
