Mr and Mrs White took their two children, Helen and Tom, on holiday to a very hot place. One day, they drove to a huge pyramid. A woman took them inside and showed them a very large room. The walls of the room had hundreds of paintings. There were pictures of men and women and animals. There was also a lot of writing in a strange language.
‘Can I take a photograph of the room?’ asked Helen.
‘No, I’m sorry. You mustn’t take photos in here. It is bad for the paintings.’
‘People found the body of a king in here when they opened the pyramid,’ the woman said.
‘Did they find expensive things with the king?’ asked Helen.
‘That’s a very good question,’ the woman said. ‘Yes, they did. They found gold shoes, expensive gloves and musical instruments.’
‘What else did they find?’ asked Tom.
‘There were expensive red stones,’ she said.
‘Wow!’ said Helen. ‘I’d like to see those. That’s my favourite colour!’
The woman smiled. ‘But the beetles were more interesting,’ said the woman.
‘Beetles!’ said Tom. ‘They’re horrible! I hate them.’
‘They were not really beetles. They were beautiful necklaces and rings,’ the woman said.
‘Was the king married?’ asked Tom.
‘That’s another good question,’ said the woman. ‘Yes, he was, but his wife wasn’t in this pyramid. They found a woman’s body in another pyramid, and that might be her.’
‘Let’s go to the other pyramid tomorrow,’ said Helen.

Zoe was in her mother’s office. She often went there in the summer holidays. She usually played quietly because her mother spent a lot of time on the phone. But this day she was watching her mother, Julia. She kept writing a few words on a piece of paper, then throwing the paper in the bin.
‘What’s the matter, Mum?’ she asked after Julia threw the tenth piece of paper in the bin.
‘Nothing, my dear,’ Julia said. ‘I’ve got a
problem and I can’t think of the answer.’

Zoe came to look over her mother’s shoulder. There was a drawing of a machine on her mother’s desk. ‘What’s that?’ she asked. ‘It’s my new idea for computers, but I can’t write easy English sentences to ....... it,’ her mother said. ‘And we can’t write the information in hundreds of different languages.’Julia looked up from her work. ‘Could you get me a cup of coffee from the machine, Zoe?
It
might help me think.’
Zoe liked getting coffee for her mother. It was easy to understand the machine. You only had to look at all the little pictures to choose black coffee or white, big cup or small, with sugar or without.
Zoe got the coffee and took it back her mother. ‘Mum,’ she said as she gave her the cup.
‘Have you thought of using pictures.........
of words? Even people who speak different
languages can understand the pictures.’
Julia thought for a moment then she got up and put her arms around her daughter.
‘You’re brilliant!’ she said. ‘You must help me with everything which I.......
