Spam là viết tắt tắt của Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages, từ này có ý nghĩa là những bức thư ngu ngốc và gây phiền toái cho người nhận.
Spam xuất hiện vào năm 1978, khi một người đàn ông gửi thư quảng cáo sản phẩm mới của mình đến nhiều người. Ông ta đã gửi bức thư có nội dung y hệt nhau đến 393 người cùng lúc thay vì gửi từng bức thư cho từng người như bình thường.
Như vậy, ban đầu spam chính là một thuật ngữ để nói về việc gửi thư điện tử (email) đến nhiều người cùng một lúc. Nội dung của những bức thư đó có thể không có ý nghĩa, hoặc mang tính chất quảng cáo về sản phẩm nào đó, mà không được sự đồng ý của những người nhận, những người nhận không hề mong muốn nhận được những email như này. Hiểu ngắn gọn hơn thì spam là thư rác, thư linh tinh, vô bổ, được gửi vô tội vạ đến một số lượng lớn người nhận, không cần biết người nhận có muốn đọc, có trả lời thư hay không.
