Tham khảo      Television  owes its origins to many inventors. But it was the single -minded determination of an amateur’ John Logie Baird ‘that led to the first live television broadcast. Born in Scotland in 1888 and educated in Glassgow’ John Logie Baird earned a living as a razor-blade salesman. In the 1890s Guglielmo Marconi showed that sound could be sent by radio waves. Baird became convinced that a similar system could transmit a picture. He spent most of his spare time working on his ideas in his tiny workshop without any commercial support. He had to use his own earnings to continue his research. In 1924 ‘Baird successfully transmitted the general outline of a figure over more than three meters. He continued to experiment and on October 25 ‘1925  transmitted a recognizable image of a doll. He ran down to the office on the office on the ground floor and persuaded one of the boys to come upstairs. The boy became the first  living image transmitted by television. Overnight ‘Baird became famous and the money that he needed to continue his research was at last made one from London to New York. He continued experimenting and spent his last years exploring the possibility of color television.

The mosquito is an insect that speards some of the worst diseases of man and animals. Certain kinds of mosquitoes carry the germs that cause such serious diseases as malaria, and yellow fever. When a mosquito“bites”, it may leave germs behind. Many kinds of mosquitoes do not spreaddiseases, but they have painful “bites”.Mosquitoes are found in all parts of the world, even near the NorthPole. Most kinds of mosquitoes that carry diseases live in the hot, damplands near the Equator. In some countries, mosquitoes often gather in
great swarms that look like clouds. They attack men, interfering with suchwork as fishing, lumbering, and mining.Man controls mosquitoes in many ways. Scientists have developed chemicals called insecticides, which kill mosquitoes and other insects.Small amounts of these chemicals kill mosquitoes when sprayed in home, garages where they grow. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in marshes, swampsand other pools of quiet water. Engineers may build canals throughmarshes to drain off the water, and often fill small pools and swamps with soil.

V. Read the following passage and fill in each of the blanks with ONE suitable word. (15 pts)

Most people think of computers (1) as very modern inventions, products of our new technological age. But actually, the (2) idea for a computer was worked out (3) over  two centuries ago by a man (4) called Charles Babbage.

Babbage was born in 1791 and (5) grew up to be a brilliant mathematician. He drew up plans for several calculating machines (6) he called. 'engines'. But (7) despite  the fact that he started building some of these, he never finished any of (8) them. Over the years people have argued whether his machines (9) would  ever work. Recently, however, the Science Museum in London (10) has  finished building an engine (11) based  on one of Babbage's designs. It (12)took six years to complete and more(13) than four thousand parts had been specially made. (14) Whether it works or not, the machine will be on show at a special exhibition in the Science Museum to (15) remind  people of Babbage's work.
