Sự tích bảnh chưng, bánh giầy đã đi vào phong tục ngày Tết Nguyên Đán cổ truyền của dân tộc Việt. Nhân dân ta đã xây dựng nên phong tục từ những cái bình thường giản dị nhưng rất giàu ý nghĩa. Chiều 30, tiếng chày giã bánh giầy vang khắp xóm thôn. Đầm ấm biết bao là cảnh cả nhà náo nức vây quanh ngọn lửa hồng nấu bánh chưng xanh. Trên bàn thờ tổ tiên phải bày vài cặp bánh chưng và mâm bánh giầy thì mới là Tết.

Sự tích bánh chưng, bánh giầy nằm trong mảng cổ tích giải thích nguồn gốc sự vật xuất hiện sau thời kì vua Hùng dựng nước. Sự tích trầu cau giải thích tục ăn trầu.
