1.It’s too noisy here. Can we go somewhere quieter?

2.This coffee is very weak. I like it a bit stronger.

3.The hotel was surprisingly big. I expected it to be smaller.

4.The weather is too cold in this country. I expexted it to be warmer.

5.My job is a bit boring, sometimes I’d like to do something more interesting.

DEGREES OF COMPARISON OF

ADJECTIVES AND ADVERDS

(mức độ so sánh của tính từ và trạng từ)

    1. Equal comparisons(so sánh bằng):

             S1 + V + as + adjective (N) / adverb + as + S2

     Ex:  He is as tall as his father.   /   Nam sings as well as his sister.

            Is the film as intersting as you expected?

 

    Or        S1 + V + the same + (noun)  + as + S2

     Ex: My house is the same height as his (house). (My house is as high as his.)

           Nam is as old as Lan. (Nam and Lan are the same age.)

    heavy / light     – weight                                  wide / narrow – width

    deep / shallow  -  depth                                    long / short    -   length

    big / small        -  size                                       old                 - age          

 

   2. Comparisons:

    a. Comparatives :                  

                                                    short adj / adv + er

                      S1 + V +   more + long adj / adv            + than + S2

                                        less    + long adj / adv

 

 short adjectives:          more happy(ier), more narrow(er), simple, clever , ....

                                     bigger, hotter.

 

 b. Double comparatives (so sánh đôi):

 [1] The + comparative + S1 + V + the + comparative + S2 + V

          (Càng ..... càng)

Ex:  The hotter it is , the more miserable I feel.

        The more you study, the smarter you will become.

[2]  Short Adj / Adv + er  and  adj / adv + er  (Càng ngày càng…)

      More and more + long adj / adv

Ex;  Betty is younger and younger.

       Her story was more and more attractive.

3. Superlatives:                      

              the           short adj / adv + est …                       in + singular noun     

S + V  +       most  long adj / adv           …                   +  of + plural noun

                     least  long adj / adv
