Lunar New Year festival, also known as Tet, is the biggest traditional festival in my country, Viet Nam. Tet is usually from the end of January to early February. Before Tet, Vietnamese people prepare many things, we always want everything to be perfect for the new year. In particularly, we clean the house and decorate it with flowers and trees such as kumquat tree, peach blossom,… In addition, a huge amount of food will be bought before Tet for making traditional dishes like Banh Chung, Banh Tet, Gio cha,… During Tet, we visit our relatives and give them wishes. Traditionally, elders will give lucky money to children and the oldest people in the family. However, nowadays, we can give it to anyone including friends, parents, neighbors. Besides, Vietnamese usually go to pagodas or temples to pray for health, wealth, success. All in all, Tet is all about going back to origins, being good to others, enjoying the precious moment, and wishing for the best to come.

Dear Luna,

I am very glad that you told me so many interesting things about England, and today it is my turn to tell you some things about my country – Vietnam. First, Vietnam is a tropical country, so the climate is hot all year, at least compared to England. In the North, you can still feel the differences between four seasons, but in the South there are only two seasons: the dry one and the rainy one. Although the hot weather is a bit uncomfortable, but in return we have many delicious fruits. If you have the opportunity to come here, I will buy some famous fruit in Vietnam such as mango, grapefruit, longan, and especially durian for you to enjoy. Second, Vietnamese people are very hospitable, and they will be very enthusiastic in helping foreigners although sometimes they cannot fully understand what those tourists are saying. You can easily find the ways to your desired destination by asking local people, but my advice is that you should not wander alone in a foreign country. Third, Vietnamese cuisine is something that no one can ignore when coming here, and many tourists come back to Vietnam because they love the food here. Every region has its own special food, and a good thing is that I know some places which have a lot of famous dishes across the country. If you think Vietnam is an interesting country, you can visit it at any time. I promise to take you to many places, and you will surely have a great time in Vietnam.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Your friend,

Huong Giang.

Nghinh Ong Festival
Eight-hundred paripants of the annual Nghinh Ong Festival marched through the streets of Phan Thiet City yesterday amid swarms of onlookers. Palanquins (elevated seats carried by two or four people), flowers and music flooded the streets for the cultural immersion festival that has brought together the Viet and Hoa (Chinese ethnic) people living together in the town to worship Quan Cong and wish for peace, good weather and prosperous harvests throughout south central Binh Thuan Province.
"The festival expresses clearly the cultural identity of the Hoa community in Phan Thiet, living together with other ethnic groups. The high amount of community involvement in the festival is what makes it original and entertaining," said Lam Quang Hien, director of the provincial Department of Culture and Information, and the festival's organising committee chief.
"Many people look forward to when Ong's palanquin and the delegation march past their street; they believe that good things will come to them," he adds.
Nghinh Ong Festival - one of five main ethnic festivals in Binh Thuan - brings calligraphy, gastronomy, exhibitions and Chinese chess to life in an impressive China Town form.
Fifteen dance troupes bearing colourful unicorn, lion and dragon costumes performed programmes to wow visitors. Included was the town's native Thanh Long troupe which presented their popular Truong Long Lion.
Classical opera (tuong) performances by HCM City based Tran Huu Trang Theatre also delighted audiences.
The festival, held on August 11-14, aims to promote tourism activities in the region, said Nguyen Van Thu, deputy chairman of the provincial People's Committee. Officials estimated the event attracted more than 40,000 visitors.

This year too, this place is welcoming a coffee season full of excitement and jubilance. There is also the vibrant color of fire and the throbbing sound of gongs. He proclaimed himself "Hunt" - the legendary epic character of the people of the Central Highlands. Hunting came and greeted everyone. The whole village seemed to be unable to believe his eyes. Is this really the hero they have admired for so long! But looking at the appearance as well as temperament, it is true that not an ordinary person like many others. Mid-Autumn Festival is under the full moon day of the lunar calendar every year in August, over 4,000 years ago. This is the day children’s festival, also known as the “Festival looks Moon”. Children are expected Tet is because adults are often donated toys, usually light. His star, mask, light pull troops … and pies, cakes plastic. Besides the Tet Holiday, Mid-Autumn festival is one of the most famous festivals and it is a traditional celebration for Vietnamese children.

In this new year, we organized presentation deck, looks moon. Everywhere is fallen in the active and colorful air. Children are provided with many nice lanterns – star lanterns, flower lanterns and diverse funny masks for special performance in the evening of the full moon. In some areas, people also held dragon dance, lion dance to the children happy. The main point of the Mid-Autumn is that children use the beautiful lanterns, wear funny masks, perform fantastic lion dances and sing folklore songs in the house’s grounds or on the streets when the moon is rising.

In Vietnam, Moon cakes are the specific cakes and are only on this festival. Moon cakes, which are made from flavor, dried fruit, meat, egg, pumpkin’s seed, peanut, are so sweet and good tasting. Moon cakes symbolize Luck, Happiness, Health and Wealth on the Mid-Autumn day.

Mid-Autumn celebration is also an opportunity for members of the family to get together and share everything in their year. The young generation express their gratitude to the old generation. The parents show their love for their children. For others, because the traditional time to have this festival is usually after harvesting the crops, it is as the congratulation for the full harvest.

Apart from moon cakes and lanterns, the other most visible tradition related to Mid-Autumn festival is the lion dance. On the nights leading up to the holiday, groups of children parade through the streets – some of the children maintain a martial beat on drums, while others control an extravagantly decorated ‘lion’ crafted from molds and paper.

The children approach homes and businesses and ask the owners for their permission to perform. If they agree, the children put on a show that is believed to bring a blessing of luck and fortune. Afterwards the host gives the children lucky money as a sign of gratitude.
