Dear Julia,

I am very happy to hear that next week you are coming to my place and staying with me for two days. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to fetch you from the station as I have a meeting on that day. But don’t worry. I will give you the directions, so you will have no difficulty finding my place.

After getting off the train at the Roma Street train station, walk to the bus stand which is just 5 minutes from there. Wait on platform 2 for the bus number 12. It will take you to my home through the inner streets of the suburb. As you enjoy the journey through the suburbs, look out for the old heritage church in Salisbury. You have to get off the bus at the next stop. Then take the Orange Grove road which is opposite the bus stop.

I’ll leave the keys under the door mat. Get inside and make yourself comfortable. I will be back home by 5:30 pm. Thereafter we will go to the city and have dinner in a restaurant of your choice.

I can’t wait to see you. Have a safe trip.

Regards,

Reema

Dear Phuong,

Thank you very much for the books you sent me while I treated my disease at home. They were very interesting and helped me relax a lot. I loved reading them very much.

Now, I have got over and felt very sad. I want to go out to enjoy the fresh air. Do you want to go on a picnic with me this Sunday? If yes, I’ll come and pick you up.

I'm looking forwards to hearing from you.

Your friend,

Ngoc Anh

In early days no medical college took a woman student. Elizabeth Blackwell, however, was determined to become a doctor. The young American wrote again and again to a number of medical colleges, asking if she could be enrolled but each time the answer was NO.

Then one day, to her surprise, she got a letter from the dean of a college in Geneva, which said YES.

At first Geneva College, like the other colleges, was not willing to enroll Elizabeth. But later the important people of that college learned that Elizabeth’s application had the support of a famous doctor, and they were afraid to offend that man.

So the dean decided to play a trick by turning the matter over to the student’s general meeting of the college, thinking that the students would be the last to agree to take Elizabeth.

When the boy students met, most students took no interest in the matter. Of the rest, some considered the young American’s idea interesting and some thought by having Elizabeth they would be proud of their college training the world’s first woman doctor. Very soon the students all agreed to accept Elizabeth.

The dean of Geneva College was of course very sorry to learn this, but seeing that he could do nothing to keep Elizabeth out, he gave in.
