Thật ra, Bịt mắt bắt dê của Phan Thanh Hiền chỉ là mô tả lại tấm tranh dân gian Băng mắt bắt dê (được khắc in vào khoảng năm 1930) của Maurice Durand (6). Theo Durand thì Băng mắt bắt dê của Việt Nam là colin-maillard của Pháp.

Trò chơi colin-maillard chọn một người, bịt mắt lại, cho đi bắt những người đứng vây tròn xung quanh. Bắt được người nào và nói đúng tên người đó là thắng cuộc. Đến lượt người bị bắt phải bịt mắt đi bắt người khác. Trò chơi cứ tiếp tục như vậy.

Có người lại quả quyết rằng Bịt mắt bắt dê là trò chơi của hội tây.

Giữa sân dựng một cây sào, trên ngọn treo 4 quan tiền thưởng (tiền thưởng không bằng một phần mười tiền phạt vì tội không treo cờ Pháp !). Sân chơi được đào hố, cắm cọc, đổ nước cho lầy lội. Người ta thả một con dê vào sân, cho một người bịt mắt vào bắt. Người chơi lần mò, vấp ngã, gây cười cho đám đứng xem. Ai nắm bắt được sừng dê thì thắng giải (8).

Theo Đào Duy Anh thì Bịt mắt bắt dê là một trò chơi của trẻ con. Tiếc rằng Đào Duy Anh không cho biết chơi ra sao (9).

Có hai cách đọc chữ Băng :

1) Durand đọc theo chữ hán là băng (băng giá).

Nhưng Băng (chữ hán) không đúng với nội dung của tranh. Vậy Băng phải được hiểu theo nghĩa khác. Hiểu theo nghĩa tiếng Pháp... của người Việt!

- Băng (bande) là một dải bằng vải hay nhựa dùng để che đậy, hay dán dính đồ vật. Học trò dùng băng keo để dán giấy. Thợ điện dùng băng nhựa để quấn che chỗ nối giây điện...

- Băng (pansement)là bọc kín, che kín. Bác sĩ băng bó vết thương.

Người Pháp còn đưa vào nước ta nhiều băng khác. Cụ lớn cắt băng (ruban) khánh thành nhàbăng (banque) ! Băng đảng (bande) xã hội đen tụ tập quanh mấy ghế băng (banc) trong công viên...

Chỉ có người Pháp mới biết băng mắt (bander les yeux) chơi colin-maillard. Cái tên Băng mắt bắt dê chứng tỏ rằng đây là một trò chơi của Pháp.

2) Chữ băng đọc nôm là bưng (hay bâng).

Bưng nghĩa là bịt (mắt), là che, là phủ bọc cho kín. Trời tối như bưng, bưng miệng cười khúc khích, bưng bít sự thực. Bưng mắt bắt chim (tục ngữ). Nghĩ đà bưng kín miệng bình (Kiều).

Trò chơi tên là Bưng mắt bắt dê. Về sau trở thành Bịt mắt bắt dê. Tên trò chơi chưa cố định vì trò chơi còn mới. Không phải trò chơi cổ truyền.

Sách Biên khảo về người Bắc kì (1908) của Gustave Dumoutier có đoạn :

- Người ta được thấy lại nhiều trò chơi của trẻ con Âu châu tại An Nam. Ca hát, đuổi bắt, dàn trận, đánh đu, đi trốn, nhảy xà, bắt dê, thả diều, lò cò, đánh khăng, đá cầu, chơi bi (bi được thay bằng hòn cuội) v.v.

Colin-maillard được (người An Nam) gọi là trò chơi bắt dê : người chơi đứng thành vòng tròn, người đi bắt dê bị bịt mắt, đứng giữa. Bắt được người nào và gọi đúng tên thì thắng cuộc (10).

Dumoutier công nhận rằng Bắt dê chính là Colin-maillard.

Ngoài ra, Bịt mắt bắt dê còn có vài điểm đặc biệt, đáng chú ý:

1- Xã hội phong kiến ngày xưa quan niệm Nam nữ thụ thụ bất thân. Đàn ông đàn bà đưa nhau cái gì và nhận cái gì của nhau, không được lấy tay mà trao cho nhau.

Trước thời Pháp thuộc, không thể có chuyện " đồi phong bại tục ", cho trai gái lần mò nhau giữa thanh thiên bạch nhật, làm trò cười cho đám đông.

2- Xã hội phong kiến trọng chữ hiếu : Thân thể phát phu, thọ chi phụ mẫu bất cảm huỷ thương, hiếu chi thuỷ dã. Mình mẩy tóc da, cha mẹ sinh ra, chớ nên huỷ hoại, là hiếu trước tiên vậy.

Trai gái giả mù để vui chơi là vô luân, bất hiếu.

3- Cho dê mặc áo tơi như người, cho người đeo lục lạc như dê. Lẫn lộn người với súc vật. Tôn ti trật tự của phong kiến không cho phép " hài " như vậy.

Bịt mắt bắt dê không phù hợp với luân lí, đạo đức của phong kiến. Làng nào dám " chơi ", dám coi thường " Khổng, Mạnh " như vậy?

Nói tóm lại, Bịt mắt bắt dê không phải là trò chơi " truyền thống " của ta.

My house is a beautiful house located in Nha Trang. My house is quite close to the sea. My house has 6 rooms: a living room, a kitchen, 4 bedrooms, a church room and a karaoke room.
