Once being a basic food of farmers and poor families in Vietnam, Com Tam or broken rice is now a favourite dish of most Vietnamese. It is said that the best broken rice can be found in Saigon. When you come to Saigon, you should try this dish at least one time and you will not regret it. Com tam literally means broken rice. Broken rice originally consisted of grains which were broken during the harvesting and cleaning of rice. In the past, as most people preferred to eat the long, whole grain rice, broken rice grains were difficult to sell and usually eaten by the Vietnamese working class because of the cheap price. Nowadays, often favored over long grain rice for its unique flavour and texture, broken rice is one of the best-loved fares in Vietnam. Sticky Rice Cake
"Chung" cake (Sticky Rice Cake) is a traditional dish of Vietnamese. The taste of "Chung" cake has become the taste of Tet holiday in Vietnam. Legend has it that King Hung VI chose the next king by asking each of his princes to offer him a dish and he would give the throne to the son who could satisfy him. The main ingredients to make “Chung” cake are: sticky rice, green bean, fatty pork, black pepper and salt. First, sticky rice and green bean are dipped in water till expanded. Fatty pork is mixed with black pepper. Vietnamese use banana leaves to wrap them all inside. “Chung” cake then will be bolt in a large pot for about 10 hours or more. The process of making “Chung” cake is time-consuming and quite difficult. However, Vietnamese people don’t mind about them because in their concept, this is good chance for all family to gather and make it together.

"Banh Chung" (Chung cake) is one of the most popular and delicious traditional Vietnamese dishes. According to the legend, Chung cake was invented by Prince Lang Lieu - the 18th Prince of Hung Emperor, in the contest of looking for new Emperor.
