Mecca
1 Mecca is a city of about 200.000 inhabitants in the Saudi Arabia, and lies about 40 miles
2 east of Jeddah, which it is its port on the Red Sea. It is the birthplace of Muhaand the most
3 greatest place of pilgrimage in the Islamic world. It is estimated that each year more than
4 100,000 pilgrims go to Mecca, so that increasing its tourist industry. This also encourages
5 and the development of the numberous small industries and craftsmem’s workshops that
6 produce leather goods and silverware to bsell to the pilgrims. Mecca has always been an
7 important crossroads for trade and although too it was a religious centre before the rise of
8 Islam, both its religious and economic importance grew as if a result of the new faith. The
9 town is impressively constructed and extends down the valley along roads which are
10 unusually wide for an Arab city. Its religious life is main centred in the Great Mosque.
