I would to talk about the Lunar New Year festival, which is the occasion expected the most by Vietnamese people every year. The festival usually lasts for around 3-4 days, and it takes place when a new year comes according to the lunar calendar.
The Lunar New Year festival takes place because it is one of the most well-known traditions of Vietnam. Our people have been celebrating this occasion for thousands of years, and although there has been some recent argument about whether we should stop celebrating this festival, I do not think this activity will come to an end soon, at least not in the short term.
There are some common things that people do during this festival. Perhaps the most important thing is that people who work and study in big cities would go back to their hometown to celebrate the new year with their families and relatives. The new year festival is one of very few occasions that families can gather together, so it is easy to understand why everyone in Vietnam expects this festival so much. Another thing that we usually do is that we give children some “lucky money” with the hope that it will bring fortune to those kids. We also have some other activities such as making “chung” cake, visiting temples and pagodas… and so on.
The new year festival is so important to me and also to all Vietnamese citizens. The reason is because we get more days off from work and study, and therefore we have more time to spend with our families and our loved ones. It is also a great time to think about what we have done in the previous year, and to make plans for the upcoming year.

I live in Ho Chi Minh City, and Tet holiday in the city is very bustling occasion. Within a month before the Lunar New Year, the streets are very crowded, many people go out to do shopping and enjoy the holiday scenery. My parents are busy cleaning the house, and I am busy thinking about what to wear and where to go. Right after we have a break from school, my friends and I spend most of the time on Nguyen Hue Flower Street to take pictures. However, Nguyen Hue Street is not the only beautiful place, almost everywhere in the main streets are wonderful for people to have great pictures. They are beautifully decorated with bright lights, and the apricot blossom - the symbol of New Year's Day can be found everywhere. On New Year's Eve, my family and I watch fireworks from Sai Gon Bridge; we have to go there before nine o’clock to get a good spot. Early in the first morning of the year, we go to the pagoda to pray for peace and health, and then I accompany my parents to visit my grandparents and relatives. Tet is my favorite holiday because it is an occasion to enjoy the festive atmosphere, delicious food, and receive lucky money. I wish that Tet could last for a month.

Chúng được trang trí rất đẹp với những ánh đèn sáng rực, và hoa mai – biểu tượng của ngày Tết được tìm thấy ở khắp mọi nơi. Vào đêm giao thừa, tôi và gia đình đi xem pháo hoa ở cầu Sài Gòn, chũng tôi phải đến đó trước 9 giờ để có thể có được một vị trí đẹp. Sáng sớm ngày đầu tiên trong năm, chúng tôi đi chùa để cầu bình an và sức khỏe, sau đó tôi sẽ theo bố mẹ đi thăm ông bà và họ hàng. Tết là ngày lễ yêu thích nhất của tôi, vì đó là dịp để tận hưởng không khí lễ hội, thức ăn ngon và nhận tiền lì xì. Tôi ước gì tết có thể kéo dài suốt một tháng.
What is your favourite festival? When you ask this question, there are many different answers. For example: Chrismas, Children's Day, Valentines' Day and so on. But all of the special holidays in my country, i love Tet the most. Tet holidays is in spring - the most beautiful season in a year. The season of Tet occurs around the beginning of February and end of January. As you know, the meaning of Tet is ending an old year and welcome a new year. Tet is an occasion to everyone get together in warm atmosphere. The weather at Tet is very well. It usually sunny or cloudy. The street is beautiful with many clourful flower. The bird is singing and the butterfly is dancing. Before Tet coming, everyone prepares many things and decorates their houses. The people buy flowers or peach blossom. I plant a lot of flowers in front of my house and buy some new clothes. That's fun. Before Tet 1 or 2 days, they cook some special dishes. Such as: banh chung, banh tet, sky rice and so on. At New Year Eve, we can watch firework. At that time, all family members try to comeback homes and get together at home. At New Year Eve, my grandfather or my father offers incense on the altar. There are some various typical Tet's food. Such as: sweets, coconut jam, fruit and so on. On the first of January, someone picks up young green leaves. Somebody goes to the pagoda or the temple to pray. I love Tet very much because at Tet, people give me lots of lucky money. Besides get lucky money, I can visit my grandparents or my reatives. Finally, I'm very proud of Tet, a special and meaningful festival in Viet Nam.
