Stamp collecting is one of the first things that come to many people’s minds when they think about hobbies. Organising your collection seems like the perfect way to relax for a few hours. It seems that people have been collecting valuable things since ancient times. (1) ……. When stamps appeared in the nineteenth century, they were cheap and children started to keep them. By the middle of the twentieth century, collecting stamps was a popular pastime for both children and adults, with some stamps worth a large amount of money – far more than most children could afford. |
There are still many people today who collect stamps, but technology is proving its impact. People can send emails instantly and freely around the world, which means that people aren’t buying stamps like they used to. (2) ………… |
Rare stamps are still in demand, and probably always will be, but fifty years ago the number of collectors were higher. It seems that stamps collecting as a hobby of millions of young people is having its day. |

My Yellowstone Winter Experience
Yellowstone is the USA's oldest national park. I spent the weekend there on a trip to Wyoming last winter, and I stayed in a hotel in the park itself. On my first day, I travelled by bus across the snow. Afterwards, my guide drove me to Old Faithful, a very famous geyser in the park. Every half an hour or so, boiling water comes out of this enormous hole in the ground and reaches a height of between 27m and 56m.
Then I went back to my hotel until it was time for dinner at the restaurant. There were delicious fish tacos and the best chocolate ice cream in the world! There were also some fantastic views outside.
On the second day, I visited Mammoth Hot Springs in the morning, but the highlight of my
day was swimming in Yellowstone. There are only two places to go swimming in the park. I
sat in an enormous, hot outdoor bath. I had one foot in the Gardiner River in freezing cold
water and one foot in very hot water from the hot springs. It was great fun and very relaxing.
The geyser is an incredible sight. Then I had time for a ride on a snowmobile. It was awesome, but it was also freezing.
