- Cơ sở kinh tế của xã hội phong kiến sản xuất nông nghiệp là chính,kết hợp chăn nuôi và ngành thủ công.

Sản xuất nông nghiệp bị bó hẹp,đóng kín ở các công xã nông thôn,lãnh địa. Ruộng đất trong tay địa chủ hay lãnh chúa và giao cho nông dân lĩnh canh hoặc nông dân rồi thu thuế.

- Xã hội phong kiến gồm hai giai cấp:

+ Phương Đông: Địa chủ và nông dân

+ Phương Tây: Lãnh chúa và nông nô

Họ bóc lột nông dân và nông nô bằng địa tô

Ở phương Tây:

- Lãnh chúa sống xa hoa,đầy đủ. Còn nông dân phải sống phụ thuộc vào lãnh chúa,đói nghèo.

- Lãnh chúa có quyền lực tối cao về ruộng đất,có quyền đặt ra các tô thuế và đặt mức thuế. Lãnh chúa còn đứng đầu cơ quan pháp luật và thống trị nông nô về mặt tinh thần.

Ở phương Đông:

- Nông dân nhận ruộng của địa chủ,họ phải nộp 1 phần hoa lợi cho địa chủ,gọi là địa tô.

- Địa chủ không có quyền đặt ra các thuế,không là người đứng đầu cơ quan pháp luật. Những việc này đều do vua ( người đứng đầu nhà nước chuyên chế quyết định)

Nhà nước phong kiến phương Đông và phương Tây đều theo chế độ quân chủ chuyên chế.
