The design of the city was influenced by the city garden movement. and incorporates important natural vegetation, making Canberra the "dusty capital."

The national capital emerged as a thriving metropolis after World War II, when Prime Minister Robert Menzies fought for the development of the capital and the National Capital Development Board formed with executive power.
