Trâu bò nước ta mắc bệnh sán lá gan nhiều vì:

- Trứng sán khi gặp nước sẽ nở thành ấu trùng có lông bơi, ấu trùng này sống kí sinh trong ruột ốc, sinh sản ra ấu trùng có đuôi.

- Ấu trùng có đuôi rời khỏi ốc, bám vào cây cỏ, bèo, cây thủy sinh; rụng đuôi và kết kén.

Trâu bò nước ta thường được chăn thả ngoài đồng ruộng, chúng ăn cỏ và uống nước ở các đầm, ao rồi lại phóng uế ngay trên đồng ruộng. Nơi này cũng chính là môi trường sống của ấu trùng sán lá gan.
