After an international design competition, a design by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin was selected and the construction began in 1913. The design of the city was influenced by the city garden movement. and incorporates important natural vegetation, making Canberra the "dusty capital."
Canberra's growth and development was hampered by two world wars and the Great Depression. The national capital emerged as a thriving metropolis after World War II, when Prime Minister Robert Menzies fought for the development of the capital and the National Capital Development Board formed with executive power.
