II. Read this passage carefully and then choose the best answers to the questions below by circling the corresponding letter A, B, C, or D. (1.0 point)

Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The main function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning in and of themselves. A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theatre provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages.

Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage. They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based on speech. Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few.

Since ancient times, one of the most common materials people have utilized to make things
with is wood. Wood is used to make houses, buildings, and other structures. People also
make a large number of smaller objects with it.
The desire to make finished products more beautiful appears to be ingrained in huma n

wooden objects to make them more appealing to the eye. Humans have additionally tended

One of the most common types of wood carvings is the mask. People in many cultures in

instance, large numbers of tribes use wooden masks for vari ous spiritual rituals. These
masks are often in the form of animals that are sacred to the tribes. In other cases, the masks
have human forms. The faces, however, may not be exactly humanlike. For instance, the
faces can be distorted, having wider, longer, smaller, or larger features than normal. The
masks may be carved to give them ugly or frightening appearances as well. And, on other
occasions, the masks are made to look as beautiful as possible.
While masks tend to be fairly small, other wood carvings can be enormous. Among the
largest of all ceremonial wood carvings is the totem p ole. Totem poles have been built by
several Native American tribes that reside in the northwestern part of North America. They
are normally made to represent families, or they may honor significant historical events.
Some even tell stories. A typical totem pole has several individual carvings on it. Each
carving represents a different part of the family history, event, or story. Most totem poles
have human or animal faces, as well as other figures, carved in them. They are so large that
they are made from e ntire trees. Once the trees are cut down, master craftsmen work on
them. When completed, they may or may not be painted. Then, the totem poles are
positioned in places of honor and placed upright.

Everyone wants to reduce pollution, but the pollution problem is as complicated as it is serious.
It is complicated because much pollution is caused by things that benefit people. For example,
exhaust from motorbikes causes large percentage of air pollution. But the automobile provides
transportation to millions of people. Factories discharge much of the material that pollutes air
and water, but factories give employment to a large number of people.
Thus, to end or reduce pollution immediately, people would have to stop using many things that
benefit them . Most people do not want to do that, of course. But pollution can be gradually
reduced in many ways. Scientists and engineers can work to find ways to lessen the amount of
pollution that such things as automobiles and factories cause. Governments can pass and enforce

Although the punk movement didn't gain cultural popularity the late 1970's, the origins of the subbculture stemmed from cultural scenes in the UK and USA earlier in the decade with radical musician such as The Velvet Underground and new thinkers like Malcolm McClaren. As with any subculture, the first stage must be the birth of the subculture which is led by cultural leader. these leaders inspire the styles and values that will become part of the subculture. In the case of punk, McClaren was very muc hthe stylist of the stylist of the punk look, selling daring clothes that the punk culture came to embrace.

Punk began in its fullest form in the 1970s, when the daring and anti-establishment concepts of the these pioneers took a more popular form. Punk sprang up largely as a result of a weakening economy and high levels of unemployment. Social and political problems are often the reason behind the next stage of subcultural development; the subcultural embrace. This is when the subculture is at its most dynamic, and is becoming increasingly accepted.

After that the subculture plateaus. This is when it become stable ans people demonstrate sub-norms which include shared ways of dressing, shared values and beliefs, and shared forms of film or music. in terms of punk, this can be seen in such things as Mohawks, a particularly striking hairstyles, and piercings. Punk often have many facial piercing which make them stand out from the norm. This need for individualism is quite strong in youth subcultures, yet at the same time is a contradiction because these very people are copying from within their groups. A striking feature at this stage is the onset of deviant subcultures, which take some charateristic. As well as often exhibiting anti-social behaviour, they distance themselves from the main subculture by mutual dislike. In the culture of punk, skinhead are an apt example of this, exhibiting all th key features of a deviant subculture.

The important thing to note is that whereas the main subculture continues through the cultural plateau to then suffer from eventual rejection, the deviant subculture continues for much longer. A youth subculture usually fade away after an amount of time as it becomes more and more old-fashioned; something which young people never like to be associated with. the 'accepted' subcultures are then replaced by a newer and more cutting-edge subculture, in the case of punk, dance and new romantic subcultures emerged which saw the end of the established subculture of punk

We went to Doi Tam, a village famous its drum making techniques, in Ha Nam Province last month. The craft was first introduced to the village sometime in the 8th or 9th century. From the outside the Maharishi School in Lancashire looks extremely normal. Walk inside
and you find rows of desks and children in uniform,
just as you would do in many other
schools. After a short while, however, you become aware of the wonderfully calm
atmosphere and the extraordinary lack of noise in the building. Talk to the teachers and you
learn that the school has no major discipline problems, there is no bullying and children are
rarely absent. So what is the secret?

Transcendental meditation and breathing exercises are an important part of the timetable at
the Matrarishi School. Pupils are taught how to relax mentally by closing their eyes and
silently repeating over and over again a'mantra', or Word of Wisdom, at certain times of the
day. Meditation is seen by some as an effective way of relieving stress, which teenagers
experience in the form of exam nerves, bullying and family break-ups. Its supporters also
say that it helps to overcome hyperactivity, anxiety and aggression.

The school was started in 1986 by a group of parents who were dissatisfied with the state
education system. The number of pupils at the school has increased since then from 14 to
100, with ages ranging from four to 16. Academic achievements are impressive and for the
past five years pupils at the school have obtained the highest average GCSE exam marks for
the whole of Lancashire. It's not surprising then, that more and more parents are sending
their children to be taught there.

Many people in the local community, however, are sti[[ unaware of the school's existence.
Others view the school with suspicion and associate it with mystic cults or the hrppy
movement of the sixties. 'Local
people don't really understand what goes on here,' explains
one teacher. 'They
just
see us as a little strange and prefer to keep their distance.'

If there is a child who is creating a problem, the school has a very thorough method of
dealing with it. A four-page form has to be filled out by the teacher, but the first three pages
of the form contain nothing but the child's good points. In this way the problem does not
become the main focus of attention; parents and teachers are encouraged to consider the
child's successes and achievements before they look at the last page.

But what do the children who study there think of the school's approach?'Meditation really
helps me with my work, says 15-year-old Ruth. 'It makes me relared and I don't get nervous
during exams. It's a shame it's such a small school, though. I can't sfudy music because there
aren't enough pupils, and when we read plays by Shakespeare we all have to read three or
four parts each. But I love it here, and I know I'll miss the peace and quiet when I have to
leave.'

However, stress is not negetive and without it we will certainly not enjoy some of the highpoints in life just as the anticipation before a date or the tension leading up to an important match. All these situations produce stress, but if you can control it and not the other way round you will feel stimulated, not worn out. Like these situations, which are generally positive but easier to deal with, sitting in a train that is late, being struck in a traffic jam, working to a tight deadline is much harder to manage and control. Stress is now recognized as a nedical problem and as a significant factor in causing coronary heart disease, high blooded pressure and high cholesterol count. The fact is that patients are often willing to admit to stress problems because they feel they are a form of society failure and it is important that symptoms should be identified in order to avoid unnecessary sufferings. So why should we be looking out for as danger singals? Some common signs of stress are increased tiredness, irritability and the inability to solve certain situations.
