It is not known when people on the Japanese archipelago used rice to make wine, but it must be at the earliest when people have cultivated rice stably and can harvest enough rice to make wine. Used for purposes other than food. It is said that the brewing method was brought from the Yangtze river basin to Japan at the same time the wet rice cultivation method was spread. In general, there are many theories about the origin of Sake, but none have received much support in Japan.

Sake can be drunk when it is cold, warm or hot depending on the season and the type of sake. Usually during winter, people drink hot sake.

Nowadays, when sake is mass produced industrially and people can buy sake from supermarkets, sake is usually stored in 0.5-liter or 1.7-liter glass bottles. Sake can also be stored in ceramic jars and paper jars. In temples, shrines and many traditional Japanese pubs, sake is stored in large barrels.
