According to legend, jack-o’-lantern protects people in their homes from ghostly spirits.

Dressing in masks and costumes is a popular Halloween activity. Costumes can be traditional and scary, such as a witch’s pointy hat and black gown. Costumes may also have modern flavour. Many children dress up as movie characters or a favourite superhero. But Halloween is not just for children. Many adults enjoy showing off their costumes at Halloween parties.

Food supplies often ran low and, for the many people afraid of the dark, the short days of winter were full of constant worry. On Halloween, when it was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world, people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being reconized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when thay left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.
